Hi all,

I'm in need of side mirrors. My rig is a 9/75 US spec FJ40 that I'm in the process of restoring. I replaced the doors with some used OEM units which I purchased from CruiserCorps and have a year range of 1975 - 1984. The mirrors that came on the truck were aftermarket monstrosities that I threw straight into the garbage when I took them off years ago.

This is my first FJ40, so I don't know what it's like to have OEM US spec mirrors. But I've read a consistent feedback about how the OEM US spec mirrors suck- vibrate all over the place and don't hold their settings at freeway speeds, etc. I've also heard that the euro spec mirrors are a big improvement.

FJ Company and Icon both sell really nice aftermarket mirrors, but they're $1,200 and $900 respectively. I've thrown stupid money at this rig, but I don't think I'm quite that stupid. :)

So, finally to my question- does anybody know how interchangeable the euro spec mirrors are? City Racer lists them on their site as sold out (their store is currently closed so I can't see if they are back in stock). I see some OEM units on eBay, but since they're Euro Spec, I don't know if they will actually fit a FJ40 with my door style.

Here's picture of my doors by the way- with the three threaded holes near the top hinge.

PS, do the US spec gaskets fit the euro spec arms? I'm talking about these things:

The bases for the euro mirrors are the same as the US mirrors (bolt pattern and gaskets). The Toyota euro mirrors are harder to come by, city racer has been out of stock on them for a long time. Seems like maybe they have come down in price I was seeing them for 5-600 but now $460 on eBay. Some of the euro mirrors are not Toyota. You can tell by the little cap on the mirror that allows you to take the mirror head off of the arm. The aftermarket units don’t have this.

Here’s a pic of the 2 bases side by side. They even have the same casting numbers inside.

Super helpful! thanks a lot.

The SOR units are cheap enough that maybe I'll take a shot on those. The ones on eBay look to be OEM, but they'll be shipping from Japan. With all of the shipping issues these days, I'd rather just get the SOR units I think.

Thanks again @MOTOV8R

I wish I would've just bought the icon mirrors. I spent at least that much time coming up with a workaround that isn't nearly as nice.

I've been happy with the Land Rover Defender mirrors so far - you can get them in flat as well as convex, and they have a nice snappy fold-in mechanism. They do need an adapter plate, but they do a good job looking like the Icon mirrors at a fraction of the price.

Did you make your adapter plates?

whats the purpose of a 1000 dollar set of mirrors? just curious what advantage you get from them. the 150 bucks oem mirror sets from cityracer work just fine. tighten them down and adjust as needed.

I did - added the 3D file to the print thread:

Side note - still a fan of the Defender setup, but ended up running a mixed configuration on the mirrors. Kept the flat-glass on the driver's side, but put a convex back on the passenger side, just was a bit more useful for in-town driving. The nice thing is that you can build whichever setup you want. 🙃

Digging up this old thread to say, the SOR copies of the EU spec mirrors are trash. My rig is finally nearly finished, and any time I exceed 30 MPH, the mirrors fold in on themselves from the wind. I've tried everything to adjust them. They are totally useless. SURPRISE, you get what you pay for!! lol.

I also noticed that City Racer has the genuine euro mirrors in stock, so I just bought a set.

I found the receipt for mine. I bought them from Partsouq.com, the mirrors were 18.75 ea (87901-60011) the arms were 37.67 ea (87902-60030) and the stainless hinge mounting screws were .94 cents ea (90159-80010). Plus shipping of course.

These seem to be the ‘sets’ that everyone sells for $225-265 a pair. Do you have any pics of them from inside? How is the coverage? Do they shake at all?

I’m satisfied with these over the plastic oem mirrors that are stock, they don’t shake and hold ajustment.View attachment 3614422
Can you see the passenger side mirror from the driver seat enough to use it? The brackets I have are a different kind and I can’t see much.
