Nubbie Question... I am returning my truck back to stock, SUA. Should I drain the diff fluid before welding on new perches?

I wouldn't bother. Shouldn't make any difference provided you don't poke through...then you've got other problems anyways.

Why not just trade axle housings with someone that wants to go SOA?

Thanks for the input, Long story... here is the short version. Truck was someone elses project when I bought it. Just want to go back to stock. I actually have another stock axle but the perches are rusted and won't properly hold a shock mount. Yada yada... BTW, does any know the wall thickness of the axle housing?

I have a axle housing I would like to get rid of, If your not in a hurry we make trips to Charleston periodically. I think it is a '71 if it makes a difference.

Nope. Burn them on.

Gear oil is not flammable if that's what you're worried about.

That is funny s***...

Conditions of flammability: Not flammable

Means of extinction: Use foam, carbon dioxide, "dry chemical" (NaHCO3). Water may actually spread the fire by floating burning material.

It is not flammable, but in the event that it is on fire, this is how to put the fire out.

Not saying I would be worried to weld on the outside, BUT all hydrocarbons (i.e. oil, gasoline, etc) will burn. A "flammable liquid" is one that has a flash point less than 100 degrees fahrenheit. The MSDS on the above link says that the flashpoint is 435 degrees fahrenheit. Therefore, it is not classified as a "flammable liquid", but that does not mean that it will not burn.

Just FYI.

Good luck

True! Must be the reason for the need to have extinction methods.:)

Less than 1/8"...its a bit on the thin side:eek:

PS I've bent one housing.

if you're worried about warpage frome heat transfer, don't worry...just burn em in. wont' affect anyhing now and we cruiserheadsa re consciece enough to change fluids enough beofre it's an issue

not w/o O2... which it would loose fast in a dif.

just make sure you leave it sealed for a while after you have welded....cause like you say it would run out of air pretty quick but if you opened it up you could get a flash back actually....theres a breather vent in your diff...so it could burn:idea: just a thought

Only concern is if you flip the axle over to burn on the pads, gear oil will leak out of the vent and make a little mess. If that is a concern.

Did your PO do a cut & turn as well?? Are you going to reverse that mod?

If it is a cut & turn housing, you may be better off selling the SOA-C&T housing and starting with a stock housing. I bet if you were to post up a trade + $$ for a SOA-C&T axle for a stock SUA axle, you could make a few bucks - or at least have the other guy pay all shipping??

Good luck.
