Hello Mud members,
I need your help in purchasing a 60 series. I have 2 that I am looking at and trying to pick the better one. Both priced at 15k.
1) 1983 Bj60. Body has been painted gray. Has some rust bubbles under the paint. The rear hatch corner has a large rust hole but still seals when closed. It doesn't start right away, takes 2 or 3 tries and fires right up. The owner thinks some of the glow plugs are bad. Oil leak coming from valve cover. Potentially rust on the frame, chassis?

2) 1984 Fj60. Body also painted in blue. Mostly rust along the rear fender wells. I believe he fixed the front. Engine rebuilt 50k miles ago. Owner said mechanically sound. Some issues with the instrument cluster light intermittently going out. Has a small oil leak where the owner can't pinpoint.

Here are the pictures of both vehicles. Is the rust going to be hard to deal with and be very expensive to fix? Should I walk away? I appreciate the help. Thank you

The BJ has a 4 cylinder diesel which is even more gutless than the 6 cylinder 2F of the FJ60.
Personally — I never would buy a BJ60 because of its engine. But that’s just me.

$1500 max for the BJ60

I wouldn't be interested in either one of those at 15k. With all due respect, if you're asking if rust is a problem and how to deal with it, you probably don't want to deal with it. And I get that everybody is different, but I absolutely wouldn't be deciding based on "the owner said". Verify for yourself, then decide. Best of luck.

Here are more pics. Sounds like these are over priced.

something like this looks like 1000 times better purchase.

@goped - it would help to know your location, but both of these look like Canadian rusty disasters to me.

The gray one is from Bellingham WA imported from Canada where they dont salt the roads according to the seller. Here are more pictures that the seller just sent me. It looks like there is some kind of coating on the frame.

@goped - Excellent photos, thanks.

That looks like the hardening tar coating that not only hides rust, it promotes it by trapping water/sand/salt under the peeled layers of tar, creating a poultice. Except this poultice doesn't exactly promote healing....

IMO, the only acceptable forms of 'undercoating' (using the term very loosely) are grease-based, gooey, self-healing coatings.
