I think I have a sickness… I already have a 1988 hj61, however there is a fair bit of rust coming through particularly the doors and gutters / under the gutters etc…mechanically it is perfect, and I have spent a heap on the engine / running gear etc
I have been on the lookout for rust free doors, but instead came across a 1989 GXL with a 3F (carby) with a bit of rust in the gutters, but perfect doors and unmarked interior (apart from the cargo area) - it is unlicensed and sitting in a farm.
The lowest they will go is $4500. (I have to commit to buying or not in the next day or so). I am thinking of getting it running, cutting the rust out, respraying it and getting it licensed… but then I will have 2 60’s and one still with rust coming through!!!
What should I do??

You are at the right place, we know about your illness, carry-on !

Fix the 2nd one (too nice to part out), sell it, and use the $$ to fix yours.

@Silveredition Posting "should I buy this Land Cruiser" on Mud is like walking into the pub and asking the old guys at the bar "should I have a drink??"

You have our support.

But, you’ll be doubling your supply of rusty roofs. I’d be looking for something with clean gutters.

No one on this forum of internet strangers knows your budget, skill level, time commitments, goals and desires better then you do.

I wise man once told me you can never have too many Land Cruisers.

as much of an enabler as i like to be matt is bang on! of course you’ll get all of us saying go for it but it’s not our money and time. i can speak to having three cruisers and at times they get overwhelming time wise and then the joy leaves. the one i want to work on is always the last one i get to work on because it’s the furthest from finished and the others need to be running so i can get to work!!

that looks like it could be a super fun project but you know you’re budget and time allowances. it looks like a solid place to start but the rust as always is probably worse than you see and roof work can be a real pain because you really do need to drop the headliner if there any metal work to be done. if your hj is running well and you’ve got time and money to play i’d still say go for it. but make sure you have time to enjoy the process of both otherwise what’s the point at all!!

Thanks everyone! After sleeping on it before making a decision, I have decided to buy it. Worst case scenario I end up paying $4500 for rust free doors and front quarter panels (all my doors are too rusted to fix) and a perfect interior (can sell the rest if needed). In the mean time, I will get it home and then clean all the spiders out of it, degrease everything and see if it starts (it has a LPG conversion with 2 X tanks where the spare usually is, and it looks like the fuel tank runs along next to the rear drive shaft…) ideally, I will get it licensed and drive 1 while fixing the other - but I am probably getting a bit ahead of myself….
