Wood crate. Plywood and deck screws.

Happy Easter all!!

Made some progress on getting the head ready for shipping, but not quite yet ready. With Easter and my son's 13th b-day, not as much got done on Marion (that's what we've named our FJ40). I was hoping to have it out tomorrow but likely will not be going out until late this week as I still need to build a plywood box for it.

The styrene packing has all been cut and placed, ready for its crate.

Some updated pictures. My most practiced hobby is woodworking, so I have had a fun time building this shipping crate. I always love the time I get with my woodworking equipment.

Started with one sheet of 3/8" plywood and a 2X4

Ripped plywood sheet down to size--top, bottom, front, back, and 2 side panels. 2X4 ripped down to 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" to be used for rails

It will take Jim longer to uncrate it than to rebuild it.

Just kidding. Good job.

I know, definitely overbuilt. This thing is just so damn heavy, I'm hoping to protect it against any rough treatment it might get by the shipping company.

Final pictures below for this leg of the head's journey to being rebuilt. It's all packed and ready to be put in the mail tomorrow to FJ40Jim.

I concede that I got carried away with the poly-straps but I am sure they will get used as handles to lift the crate so wanted to make sure they wouldn't break. Hopefully labeling the handles as the lift points will be heeded.

I felt a little proud when my son saw the final product and said "It looks like the crate the Ark was stored in in Raiders of the Lost Ark."

@FJ40Jim, when you get it, the side panels screw off (panels with the brown Phillips head screws) and the head will easily slide out. The side panels are color coded so it will be easy to tell which panel goes on which side when putting it back together to ship back to me.

Fastenal is good, I also used Greyhound bus a long time ago. Much cheaper and less damage, but not sure if they still accept shipping. Might be worth a call.

I've used Greyhound Package Express three times recently, but for lighter, bulkier items (FJ40 hardtop side panel, FJ40 windshield frame, and FJ60 tailgate). I don't remember if they accept heavier items.

Mark shipped me a hood via Greyhound. It arrived unscathed and the box was in good condition. I think they were real careful andmade sure it sat on top of other stuff in the bowels of the people-hauler.

Are those JIS screws and NOS ply?

Ha!! I went to Home Depot and asked for JIS screws, they looked at me like I had 2 heads. Toyota said their plywood/deck screws are NLA!! Just my luck.

Looks great, it’ll be in good hands here in OH. Maybe @FJ40Jim will post pics of the crate on his end.

Uh Oh. You didn't label it in Spanish and 12 other languages for the guys that actually load and unload this stuff !

And to be politically correct, use light pastel colors for the ink for their female counterparts !

And some of our Kalifornia labels that say "California has determined that this item may cause cancer and reproductive difficulties".

All kidding aside, great job on the crate.

Odds are in your favor. Once and only once did I have a damage claim on a crated head.

Head showed up at the other end...WITHOUT THE CRATE! ...and damaged on four separate corners.

My conversation with claims assistant went something like this:

Cylinder heads don’t bounce. The only way to damage a head on four separate corners is to DROP IT FOUR TIMES.

They paid the claim.

Today is an especially great Friday. Came home to this beautiful sight from @FJ40Jim. Work was especially taxing today so opening it will have to wait--I'm too pooped out tonight. Tomorrow morning will be like Christmas for me and Marion!!

Total package weight (for the crate and box) was 138 pounds!!

Back home, safe and sound. The crate help up well.

Box on top is the intake and exhaust manifold assembly that Jim worked on for Marion. 138 pounds.

Stay tuned. More pictures to come after the uncrating.

Just in time for the weekend. Great!
