Out with the old, in with the "new"

Before and after pics. Thanks to a generous Mud member (RolandFJ40), my new to me drivers side seat. I stayed stock (Juggernaught) by converting a passenger side seat (Trapper) that is in great shape. My thanks to all for the suggestions and advice.

 Scott

i re-did my upholstery last year. i went with the sor replacement cushions, sor leatheresque covers and put in seat heaters in the front. the ride and comfort is firm but comfortable and the look can't be beat. i couldn't be happier. check out my post for more:

jpeg that looks sweet, well done.

I'm doing my best to stick with my budget build, oxymoron if I do say so myself, and I plan to get seat covers in the near future. Wet Okole is my leading candidate based on this being our family camping rig once it's done.

Couldn't justify putting all the $$ in for $OR product at this time as nice as it is. Seeing rigs like yours certainly is tempting however. Thanks!

Mildot, I went back and tracked your thread on the PT seat conversion. Great stuff. Thanks for all the detail.
Not in need of the swap immediately but we had talked about it. I'm going to start searching CL.

They are comfortable. Deep seat bottom and good side bolsters keep me in place in all sorts of odd wheeling situations - a MUCH more stable feel.

I had to do some significant modifications to the underside to make them fit. I used stock sliders welded to the seat's frame after removing just about everything I could. The problem was that the seat bottom is very thick and I needed to lower them as much as I could. As installed they are probably a bit higher than stock.

Pick n Pull, I think I paid $15 each for them. Probably spent 10 hours getting them modified - lots of trial and error. Another set would probably take 3 hours or so... Bottom line is to remove everything you can then build your bracket/adapters to the stock sliders.

Your seats look great, Scott.

I think OEM looks the best. I realize that newer vehicle seats are more comfortable with modern features but vintage Toyota looks right to me.

I just picked up an '88 with a fairly tattered grey interior. The front seats will need a lot of work so I'm apreciating the posts from Mudders who have tried different options. Every time I get in a rental car I can't help but think, "would these seats work in my 62?"

Has anyone tried Volks Wagon seats?

If anyone needs some gray 62 seat cover material, I have some from a rear combo I used to put headrests in my 60.

I have the upper and lower in really good condition, but the lower does have a small tare in the front vinyl section of the lower. I have seen people use the rear covers to remake the fronts like SOR does.

I also have the rear foams - 62 lower,60 upper and the 60 steel pan.

PM me for details.

Doug

Many thanks. As you said I had lots of options thanks to the forum. I honestly went this route as it was the first solution to present itself, but couldn't be happier that I kept the stock look.

Looking at Woyotovich's seats, which match the Tuffy console very well I might add, I have another option for the future when "new" old seats aren't as plentiful.

To answer your last question, my wife had a VW Jetta that had seats that looked great but I always found them to be short in the seat. I'm average height, 5'11", and felt my legs were always hanging over the front edge of the seat without support. I was never quite comfortable on longer drives. My 3-series seats are very nice and I've done two cross country moves with the family and could drive all day.

You COULD always get Scion, or other, junkyard seats and have them recovered with stock fabric....

Still Toyota, stock interior match, better seat. Genius!

I have some leather Lexus es300 seats (free :)) I will be fitting very soon. I'll be sure to post results.

Anything is better than the stockers... ugh.

I have fabric from a grey FJ60 - front and rear seats. Could be for sale if anyone is interested...
