Certainly, but there’s a difference between walking between the campsites where the group is and having to hop in your rig to make it what you want and meet more cruiserheads.
In that back loop area was where most of the SASers were before we got first dibs on the whole place. I just know I felt like we weren’t part of the event very much where we were last time. In fact our trucks missed the picture on Wednesday evening because of it.
It does if it’s your first time and you aren’t aware when and where it’s happening. In hindsight we should’ve asked when and where. I naïvely thought it would be way more obvious and/or someone would’ve given us a heads up. I use the picture just as an obvious example of all of the unknown shenanigans we missed out on.
That was not our experience. I’m not saying anyone has done a bad job, but it is a lot. I know Casey and Jimmy very well and I know that it is an absolute ton of work to get this thing going every year. It is my opinion that the layout of the entire facility doesn’t necessarily facilitate mingling and socializing. And that’s fine. It gives folks the choice of how social they want to be or not. Where we were left a lot to be desired on the socializing part.

We had to get in our rigs and go to the other side of the park to see what was happening everyday, sometimes more than once or twice.

Not trying to be a stick in the mud or anything, just think folks should be aware.

🙃
I’ve worked long and hard to get KOA to support our event by blocking the dates from the public. The past two years they have actually blocked the dates for us and given us first dibs to fill in as many as we can where ppl want to be. The back loop does fill up first and quickly and we do our best to work with KOA staff to keep our group together.

Some ppl cancel and the staff does not move that site to our block, sometimes they do. We are their only group this size and so they have worked with us to make it much smoother that the past where we were mixed with the public a lot more. The GM, Jeff, is willing to help make this as smooth as we can.

Some ppl slip through the cracks and or don’t tell the staff when booking outside of our blocked dates that they are with SAS so they get put wherever.

We try to make it flow as best we can and we try to get all the info out to ya at sign up and on here.

The registration tent is located in the back behind campsites T23&T24 and the reason is because of the open space back there for our registration tents and raffle night.

In years past and this year I have made posts on here to inform you all as much as I can about when and where things will be, sometimes I feel I overdo it but I guess not. I also have white boards hanging at registration and written on the trails white board what day picture is on so you can plan accordingly.

I do have a post on here somewhere…

where I have put up the lite schedule for the event. There are several more before this one.

I apologize for any newbies that feel uncomfortable, I was that person year 2 and have found my way to being a director. It is a fun friendly social event and buzzing around is the way to do it. Some ppl are at their camp tinkering and some go to other’s camps to tinker, some just sit at their camp and watch and others go to other’s camp and sit and watch. If you see a cruiser say hi!

And getting on the trails with others is the best way to make new cruiser head friends. Switching up your trial groups or sticking to the same, it’s whatever your comfortable with.

Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

But I’m glad you got a spot where you feel you’ll be happy and comfortable.

SAS is a loosely organized meet-up/event of Toyota 4x4 equipped with solid front axle and the Ouray KOA has bathrooms AND showers and has a great location.

Wish everyone fun packing, focused rig prepping, safe travels and a memorable event!

I have been responsible for administering several events. It is as far from easy as one can imagine. The job is huge and largely thankless.

I appreciate your efforts.

As a newb, I think you’ve done great! And others have as well.
I appreciate all the info and feel very prepared, while at the same time don’t know what to expect in some areas, which is just fine.

Your hard work is appreciated!

I echo what others have said and it is quite impressive to see all of the planning come together. I think that you are doing an outstanding job keeping us up to speed, Catherine and Gab, and I know that there are others behind the scene working hard, too. I especially like the visual posts with different colors to emphasize important information.

I’ve learned that you have to follow this thread very closely to keep up to speed, and I have contributed to that by posting fun things that aren’t necessarily relevant, like AI generated Cruisers driven by big foot (I for the life of me still can’t figure out how to get that bezel on the right way).

I often use the search function by member name and read just @Mesa Woman and @mesa man ’s comments to make sure that I am not missing anything. Keep up the great work! I wish that I could do more to help but it doesn’t look like you need it.

Some people don’t like to read a lot.
Sometimes nuance, even meaning, is lost in posts, compared to the spoken word.

The colored and bolded posts are a little thing that is very helpful.

The Bigfoot in that rig has a reason to not be smiling I suppose, he needs more headroom. Obviously didn’t build it himself.

Are there any runs to Wheeler Geological area during the week? Looks like an interesting place, thinking about getting across the boring stuff quick and then loafing our way to Ouray, thought about checking it out on our way in.

Just find those newbies and help make they feel welcome, a part of the group/event and invite them along. This is great fun for one week that comes and goes sooo quickly! ☺️

Follow Casey, Potato Launcher as well. He’s got some good things to say and has the smarts of rig prepping.

Thanks for everything y'all do. It it truly appreciated. My posts were not intended to poo poo anyone or the event in general, but to share some perspective on the layout based on previous experience.

Please do not worry about us feeling uncomfortable. We had an absolute blast! If we hadn't we wouldn't have been trying to come back every year since 2021 or every year before when Jimmy and Casey told me about it. It is probably my fault for missing or forgetting any communication provided. Being in the thick of it is how I plan to minimize any of that for us.

We have some really awesome people that make SAS happen every year. From getting the registration set up to handing you a swag bag at the registration table requires a lot in between. We do this on top of getting our own trucks ready and driving to Ouray.
We are truly humbled by the turn out each year.
Everyone is welcome to do as much or as little as they want while attending. Its our vacation as well as yours. We just ask that you be respectful of the community. Be aware of speed limits, follow animal leash requirements, help out where you can, ect..
If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to us.
See yall in a few weeks.
Casey...

Yes, Casey has been very helpful. He probably doesn’t know it but his checklist reminded me that I needed to replace my first aid kit.

Just got done throwing these bad boys on and the panhard bracket.

Is anyone hitting any harder trails this year? I’ve done yankee boy, engineer pass. Got OKish 35s, 3.5” lift and triple locked.

Not experienced enough to lead any trails but can keep up. Usually just tag along to see what other trail leaders are doing.

LMK!

is going to be my 4th event.

I’ll preface by saying this is going to be my 4th event.

Coming in, we don’t really know anyone and we’re not with a specific group (like KC or Texas for example). However, we’ve just asked to tag along for whatever trail leaders are doing for the day. The people that we have met have been extremely nice and welcoming. So even thought we don’t really know anyone outside of SAS, I think we’ve made some acquaintances which were able to see yearly, and are able to join their trail runs.

A lot of it just asking if there’s anyone you’re able to tag along with. Our experience has been great, and I’m looking forward hopefully tagging along with some groups this year again.

I will be leading Poughkeepsie on Monday but we are already full.

I will lead a group over Black Bear on Tuesday morning, early. I have plenty of room for this run.

I am also running the Holy Cross trail a week after on 8/14 if you are still in CO. DM me if you are interested as this isn’t part of SAS.

Will join the Black Bear unless we do Cruise Her run.

Thanks!
