There's no air. It's putting fuel in like there is air, and there's no air.
My R2.8 doesn't do anything unless real cold at ~1k elevation. It hazes constantly at elevations, and that's a common rail engine. Fuel management should be about as tight as it'll get. Plus I've got a small cat.
I don't think I've ever seen black smoke out of my Chi-Comm Cummins though.
"but it has a turbo!!!!!" Yep, sure does, and it doesn't do anything when it's not making boost.
Put it under load, build up cylinder/EGT temps, hammer it all the way to defuel and it'll burn clean on the second pull after it's cooked everything out.
We're mostly idling around, and diesels will do diesel things with no heat or boost.
Some of the gassers are rough to follow too.
I will say, try to use local fuel. Mine was hazing less on fuel I bought up there than what was in the tank from Minnesota.
The 12ht's seem to throw out more smoke than the 1hz's. But probably not enough of a sample size. I recall one in particular from years past that was super smokey, then the owner cleaned off the air filter and it got a lot better. Clean filter is really important for smokeyness, esp on a mechanical diesel at altitude. I like to run the Schaeffers Carbon Treat diesel additive, have seen noticeable increase in smoothness, ease of starting, and less smoke in a few older diesels with it. My little Cummins didn't seem bad at all when I had it out before, but then again I wasn't driving behind myself

I ran my 12HT last year and it was pretty good while level and going uphill but downhill was a different story

I will recommend that as we get closer to the gathering to get up under your vehicle and do a good once over. Grab a hand full of the Toyota common wrench sizes and check everything for tightness. Torque those U-Bolts and TRE's, Exhaust hangers and manifold bolts. Although the trails are for the most part not very difficult they will shake and rattle a vehicle to death. Most of us do a Pre-Flight checklist before heading up.

In at least one instance, a caliper bolt was lost on the paved highway on the way to SAS #1, somewhere in Texas or NE New Mexico - check those too. IIRC, it happened again at/on the way to another SAS.
