I am really excited its not flipping raining this afternoon! every day afterwork its just been raining this week. It rained so much yesterday the tailgating tent I was using to cover everything collapsed. Luckly everything stayed dry. I am going to bolt up the motor mounts today use some rust converter on everything. hopefully get to the clutch and dropping the engine in tomorrow. then transmission Saturday or Sunday. My parts from SOR wont get here till Monday or Tuesday next week. These parts include the little slave cylender bracket and a few other parts. I also need to measure and buy drive shafts once everything is bolted up. maybe by the time I get it all back together it will be warm enough to run the 40 without the top. It was about the middle of the month last year that I took the top off and left it off till august haha.

Huge steps were made yesterday. little bit of trail and error and now the engine is in. I still need to line bolt down the rear mounts and line them up. I am relieved that I can just put the hood back on and not worry about rain now as I work on it. The goal today is to get the clutch installed and get the rear mounts all bolted down. Then hopefully either tomorrow morning or Sunday (depending on weather) Installing the transmission. I am hoping to start it in the fj40 some time next week.

Some side notes: I am pretty sure my rear passenger mount is from a fj55 or somthing different than I normally see. Looks to line up and work. Ill post a picture this afternoon. it has just a singular big puck style mount.

Its hard to imagine this time last year it still had janky power steering, bestop seats, and a SBC.

Nice job. It’s looking fantastic.
Thanks! its a good feeling to have it in there. I still have plenty of work to do but its coming together!

Some good news with a few minor setbacks. I got an air cleaner, my clutch kit fork and slave bracketry is installed. I also got most of the column shift linkage set up and mostly figured out. However I completely forgot that the transmission has an adapter for the SBC and I do not have the correct 3speed input shaft cover. 27 on the diagram below So i need to find one and get it here pronto.

My other setback is my Fan does not quite fit correctly with the shroud and radiator. seems to a little too wide and sitting a little too high on the radiator. I am wondering what everyone elses solution to the fan is?

The chevy adapter plate.

Input shaft bearing looks great at least.

This has got to be my favorite trick in the book.

those little pins to hold the bearing assembly on are no joke. huge pain in the aaaa.

Update, I found the 3speed input shaft cover on flee bay. I just went ahead and bought it.. 27 on the diagram. this is what it looks like below. Probably spent too much but I would like to have it as soon as I can. spent about 90$ on it.

I have some hardware and a few other do dads coming from SOR (they have been getting all my money lately)

I have a collection of fans that didn't quite work.

The big deal for 2F in a formerly 1F space is clutch vs. no clutch fan.

Here's how I solved my clutch fan issue in my thread.

I ended up using Aisin FANB75020 on my clutch 2F assembly from Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters.

Thanks! I am going to try another 6 blade fan to see it it works better. I am running no clutch. I am also realizing that the radiator bracket thing that holds the radiator was getting caught because It was not designed for the front of my frame on the earlier fj40. I painted the bracket I have and am going to try and use that tomorrow and see if it makes any difference.

I finally got the cruiser to run with the petronix. the best part is I started it with the key inside the salt wagon. For the life of me I could not get the thing to run with the petronix. then I realized It had a sticker on the lob side of the sensor and I pealed it off and adjusted timing and it started right away. I wonder if thats what was causing it not to run. Anyway its great now. Some other updates. I mostly installed the throttle linkage and the pedal. I just need to weld some holes from the old pedal and bolt everything down tomorrow after work. I also have almost got the alternator all wired up. I gotta figure out witch terminal goes to witch wire and It will be good. I had to extend the wires because the alternator is on the opposite side now.

I have a question for anyone that can answer it. where do I wire the idle solenoid on the carburetor? its a single wire solenoid. I read that the earlier fj40s would wire this solenoid wire to the + on the coil?

Quick update: I am in the parts waiting game right now before I can move forward 100%. maybe getting some stuff in on the weekend. I am waiting on lots of things. I am waiting on the transmission bearing cover. Hopefully it gets here Friday. I am waiting on a 6 blade fan from city racer. Trying to see if that will fit better. waiting on some vacuum plugs from amazon, waiting on fan belt from CCOT so I can start tuning everything and Install the radiator, I am happy to be waiting on some 3speed drive shafts coming from @cruisermatt , Waiting on a bunch of little hardware stuff from SOR, and waiting on a transmission gasket kit from Cruiserteq.

I did get some stuff done yesterday. I got the wiring for the alternator done. It needed to be lengthened because the original alternator placement was on the driver side and now its on the passenger. I also got the wiring for the fuel cut solenoid wired to the + of the coil.

I installed the break line I broke. Luckly with no fuss. snipped the old line at the fittings heated them up with a map gas torch and they came right out.

I also had to do some modification to make a linkage pedal work on the 40 that came with a cable linkage (although all those parts are long gone). Cutting a hole to make it work was stressfull and turned out ok but not the best. I am hoping the red gasket will hide most of it. I am going to go in today and see if I can weld up the unused holes and such on the firewall. Then hopefully bolt everything down. I thought about using rivnuts but I think just bolts and nuts will work fine. I'll post pictures when I am finished.

Lastly yesterday I got all the linkage for the 3 on the tree and vacuum shift working correctly. I still will need to tighten everything down. I left it loose in case I needed to disconnect stuff while getting the transmission bolted in. Its really cool to see all the Linkage working correctly. I didnt even realize that my vacum shift 4low linkage rod was bent to make it work. I think they bent it because they relocated the pivot point to the frame and they needed the linkage rod shorter. I have moved this linkage back to the bell housing mount and luckily somebody had sent me extra parts and I had a non bent part. I am really happy I am moving it back to a column shift. I think its going to be really cool when its done.

I am thinking I might replace the parking brake stuff while the transmission is on the ground. I have a kit already that I bought when I purchased the fj40.

I just realized today that my alternator pulley was wrong due to the sbc swap yesterday afternoon when I was trying to install the fan belt. Luckly the fan belt fits. DARN THAT CHEVY! City racer to the rescue. I really should have just bought the alternator. I will actually buy it I am thinking this summer just for reliability. I am Hoping it will come in next week sometime so I can get it running after work. Hell by next week it might be running and driving! I do not much left to do. The transmission will go in this weekend as I think all my parts will be here. I am planning on welding a few things Like the holes in the trans tunnel welding some unused holes in the fire wall (really should have done this before the engine went in) and finishing up the gas pedal.

My goal right now is to having it starting and shifting by the end of next week. Just crossing my fingers all my parts get here.

I am chaperoning a senior DC trip for work for from the 24th to 28th and then on the 31st I am flying out to Maine for a week for my spring break. if any mud member wants to meet up in Maine let me know. I will be around Portland.

@Coolerman sells a kit to move the alternator wiring.

My better half is from Portland. It’s pretty cool up there, I hope we go back soon.
