I have a 18 gallon saddle tank and get many questions about it. There have been several threads, but not one place for info on these tanks, so I started this thread.

Here are some other posts about saddle tanks on Mud - https://forum.ih8mud.com/search/5001061/?q=saddle+tank&o=relevance&c[node]=27

The tank I have came from AU and was made by the Brown Co. It was used and was imported many years back. With the saddle tank and the stock tank, I carry about 42 gallons of fuel.

I converted my 60 to diesel and have averaged 20.3 mpg over the last 30k miles of all types of driving, so I have a range of roughly 800+ miles.

My tank mounts along the inner frame rail on the right LEFT - DOH! side, and runs from the transfer case to the rear axle. I modified my existing fill location to allow me to fill both tanks by angling the fuel nozzle into the stock main pipe, or to the rear and into the pipe I added. It works well and is easy to fill and make. I had a muffler shop bend up a section of 1 1/4" pipe for me, which I welded to the stock fill pipe.

I use two 3 way manual tank selector valves to control the supply and return lines. I mounted the selectors in front of the drivers seat on the floor.

Take a look at the pictures and I will answer any questions I can

There was a technical malfunction this morning when I tried to load pictures. Hopefully it works now???

Well, something is going on, I get an error message anytime I try to load a picture? I have loaded the same pictures in the past, and had no trouble yesterday, any ideas?

Anyone having problems uploading pictures today?

I keep getting this message after the upload reaches 100% -

I had that trouble with a hotel wifi, I did a full malware scan, usual clean up, crap clean and reboot. Maybe that helps you?

I think it's a Mud problem. as I can load the same pictures on several other sites without issue.

I tried loading images I loaded onto Mud on Tuesday of this week, and they wont upload now?

I PM'd Woody, and he is checking it out.

Hopefully it works now???

Still having picture problems. I can load 1 picture, then it fails, sometimes 2, fail, then none?

Doug720 - "My tank mounts along the inner frame rail on the right side, and runs from the transfer case to the rear axle."

This is where you had me, but I think its the LH side. I've seen this before, but didn't realize the tank was as large as it is.
Really good install, obviously the heat from the exhaust isn't having any effects? Is the tank vented separately or through
the fuel cap? Really nice install. I'm going to relook at this side tank, as I am in need of more range.
Do you have the actual capacity of this tank by itself? Well done, J

OOPS! I guess I was facing the rear when I posted the "Right" side! Sorry.

The tank has a built in heat shield along the exhaust side which is galvanized material, and no problems at all with heat.

I removed the stock 60 plastic vent separator in the rear 1/4 panel, and combined the main tank and saddle vents. There are two vents, the Toyota fill vent which is larger and connects to the fill pipe, both tanks use the stock connection, and both tanks have a general tank vent which is a reverse "J"looped in the upper 1/4 panel with a breather. It is open to vent or suck.

The fuel cap is a vented factory diesel cap.

The tank holds about 18.5 gallons, per my note when I filled it from empty.

The tank has a sender, but I never connected it, I just switch tanks at around 320 miles - 20 mph X 18 gal. = 360 miles, so I have a 40 mile/2 gallon cushion. I have ran it empty, and if I'm moving on the highway, I can just switch valve positions and keep going. If it's on a slow section...I have to prime it with the manual IP primer. Easy and only takes a couple of minutes. But 320 miles works pretty well.

The saddle tank works well for our needs, as we keep the spare under the stock tank, and well carry an extra 18 gallons of fuel.

I have found the builder of your tank I believe. It list at 70 litres/ 18.5 US gal / 15 imp gal. Looks like a really good
fit, I'm going to look into this. Factory tank is 90 litres, so this would be preferable to a large rear 180 litre tank that
GoAnyWhere in Australia makes.
Here is the link I found

This is the super large rear tank, and the website. Very similar to MAF, but larger.

I have to admit, thanks for posting the saddle tank thread. Better for center of gravity as well.
