Looking for a tried and true method used to store light/moderately weighted items on my Prinzu rack. Would love to use Alu-boxes but they are too $$$$

What's worked well for you?

Thanks

Joe

I just bought a packasport 115 off craigslist for $150. They are solid cases. Way more sturdy than Thule or yakima. They are what appears to be 5/16 fiber glass. Weighs almost 200lbs. Two people can sleep inside. I bought a new seal kit and rattle canned it black.

Pics?

The Plano rifle cases are popular with the Tacoma crowd. Good quality, foam liners that can be customized, weather proof. Black or tan are the colors I've seen.

How do they mount?

the local buy and sell roof cargo box works fine, if I had an AR I wouldnt leave it locked on the roof like the one photo.

What are you looking to store up top? Sleeping bags and bedding?

Define light weight

Those Pelican like boxes are real nice and heavy duty.

I got a used Yakima sky box last year for cheap on Craigslist and is very lightweight and was awesome to have for storage of lightweight stuff. Cleared up a lot of room from inside the truck during roadtrips.

Digging my wolf pack boxes from front runner if you prefer small and separate cases.

They also have bags which wouldnt be a bad way to go. There are other roof specific storage bags as well Similar to the big roof pods by thule etc.

One of our club members has been rocking a whole rooftop of the rubbermaid action packer (?) totes i believe for years now.

You can usually find a Thule or Yakima or other brand type "rocket box" on your Craigslist for a fraction of the new cost. Also, the classic Sears X-Cargo Smiley Snail box may be lacking cool, but it sure stores some luggage out of the rain... You can also look at the bag type carriers. I think it foolish to leave a weapon in a external storage container like that. I can see it useful of a hi-lif jack or other awkward items but the volume is such that it's not super useful for light. high volume items.

Ever get the feeling they got you pulled over? Just curious

I'd love a few rifle sized pelican cases, but I'd never bolt them to the roof. If they look like rifle cases they will be targeted by thieves as though they were. It's just asking for trouble if you ask me.

I don't have any of them, I've just seen them a lot on Tacomas and 4Runners. Haven't heard of any of them being targets of thieves. Pretty sure they are all bolted down and use locks. I did a bit of digging on the Tacoma forums and couldn't find any examples of issues with theft or attempts, or being pulled over for having them. Of course if you're not comfortable with this storage solution no one is forcing you to use it. But the OP asked for suggestions and that's all this is.

Here's several images of Tacomas that use them.
