Well this is my first foray into the rebuild of the FJ40, while I have built a few American Cars and Classic VWs one thing they have in common is every time I buy a repo part I usually end up throwing it in the bin as it’s crap. it seems the FJ40 is no different I bought a couple Turn signal lights on the front guards, I wouldn’t fit them to a go cart they are junk this is after the reseller telling me they are an exact copy…. NOT. Genuine ones ordered

Yup. Welcome to the Land Cruiser world.

Always buy OEM Toyota whenever possible or available.

Most everything is absolute dogshǐt.

Its a learning curve... l bought a clutch slave cylinder & resevoir from Japan at the start of my resto thinking it would be okay, turned out the cylinder was too narrow (1/2') and mechanic had to add an extra nut between the cylinder & the securing bolt, it leaked within months, since fitted the right cylinder & l'm going to refit (with new inserts) the original resevoir as the replacement is leaking at the pedal. Same goes for the indicators, mine had cracked the metal fitting plates on both l bought from another japanese supplier & the new indicators didn't fit right (they supplied 2 right indicators (not L&R) anyway l adapted between the original outer unit & the new internals to make them fit as the metal plates was what l was after & being internal to the housing it was all l could do without returning them & waiting weeks for the original replacements..job done but what a pain.

When I am looking for parts that I can't get off an original vehicle I sniff around this forum for reviews and find what sources are decent and not. I haven't been disappointed yet in other members' opinions of various replica parts. Some items just look obviously crappy but a review from someone who had first hand experience is invaluable. Keep the feed back coming.

I said this recently in another thread, but I have found parts from City Racer to be very high quality. Sometimes they have OEM Toyota parts, sometimes they have parts made by the OEM supplier, and other times they have reproduction parts made to their specifications. Pricing on their OEM Toyota parts is better than I have been able to get through various Toyota dealer's discounted pricing programs.

I have yet to be disappointed in any of their parts, and their customer service is simply excellent!

Here's an example: Lots of vendors carry aftermarket weatherstripping, which is significantly less expensive than OEM Toyota, which is available for at least some model year FJ40s. The aftermarket weatherstripping generally has a bad reputation. The OEM Toyota is made from a different type of rubber than the rubber used by City Racer in their weatherstripping. I sent City Racer an email questioning why. I got back a very detailed explanation of the differences, and why City Racer used the other type of rubber. The explanation was so compelling when it comes time to buy weatherstripping I'll buy City Racer's rather than OEM.

I have also found orders are shipped quickly and shipping charges are quite reasonable.

This reads like such a glowing review I should point out I have no affiliation with City Racer.

x2 City Racer aftermarket is good stuff.

If its brake or clutch cylinders look at CBC in Christchurch, they will stainless sleeve your masters and slaves, very quick turnaround. Then you've still got your genuine bits. Will cost more than china repro but vastly better, I think they are an improvement on original corrosion wise.
Freight kills American suppliers down here.

Its usually cheaper for me to buy most of my parts in Australia & pay shipping to Scotland..what stings everytime is the additional import taxes the govt applies...it can be 20%+ of the value plus 'admin'....(pirates)

I got a feeling that shipping is going to take second place to tariffs. The result will be more unobtanium. And soon enough everywhere will be like Cuba - old crap held together with string and gum. Klooge skills will be in high demand.
The reciprocal tariffs are going to sting in America the most, its become absurd... Who in their right minds adds additional taxes to a supplier of a much needed resource & thinks they'll accept them without push back. Simple truth is the west has to accept that the world has changed, the global majority now have other options than the west & threats/bullying won't wash anymore, its over...the west either learns to adapt & 'trade' like everyone else is doing or be left behind to wallow in its decaying state of 'so called democracy' with wanton corruption & lost rights/freedoms. Sorry folks but thats the truth of it.. And yes klooge skills will be in very high demand, all those university 'media studies career choices' will soon vanish for engineering & multi skilled courses...

Though on the other side of the pond, this is my expressed opinion too:

old crap held together with string and gum.
“Old crap held together with ductape and layers of rusty metal”

Fixed this for you… now it sounds like my truck

Some of us are already there my friend lol

Parts and such were much more price obtainable at one time … even whole parts trucks were hundreds or free … now it’s 2k for rusted out garbage … it got out of hand really fast :meh:

"Simple truth is the west has to accept that the world has changed"

And some people are trying to fix it (trade imbalances).

The tech part of this is what we all know, Chy nuh makes cheap (and counterfeit) parts that don't fit, don't work, and don't last
and dumps them all over the world.

Edited for clarity

You're 2 statements are a little hypocritical. A bug and windshield or a goose and gander come to mind. It's OK for one, but not the other.
