I started the thread on my blown 2LTE in my LJ78 a few weeks ago.

I am ordering parts to repair the engine, and I have a few more questions. Here are the parts I’m ordering-

-Head with gasket kit
-Camshaft
-Valves
-Big end bearing

Which head a good option for a replacement for the 2LTE head?

-1kz?
-2nd gen 2LTE?

If the 1kz head is the way to go, should I get camshaft and valves specific to the 1kz?

Any other suggestions when replacing these parts?

Thanks

@rookiecruiser , 1KZ is not the same as 2LT head... you need the 2L head.
You can source the 2L head for about a $1000 Online.
Search the forum for 2L-T threads.

Ok thanks.

I have heard a lot of owners replacing with the 3L head. Is that a good idea? Is it an improvement over the 2LTE head?

Any suggestions where to get a 3L head from?

Any other suggestions for replacement heads without cracking?

Apologies for making a new thread since there are previous threads on this topic.

My vehicle is a 1992 LJ78 prado

thanks.

@rookiecruiser , well some people do certain things, like putting Chinese copied 2L-T heads on their rigs to save a couple bucks, but personally, I would put the OEM Toyota 2L-T head on that engine, not the 3L that was not designed for turbo applications and having to tweak or change other thinks like cam, rockers, injection pump fuel adjustments, and most probably confusing the hell out of your ECU...Just get the Toyota 2L-T head.

And make sure you get the correct head gasket....rumor has it, there are a few sizes/thicknesses out there.

This helps.

I am under the impression that my 92 LJ78 prado has the 2LT-II and not the 2LTE.

if that is the case- can I still replace the head with a 2LTE 2nd generation?

or is there a special head for the 2LT-II?

Cutting to the chase— do your answers and conclusions here apply to both the 2LTE and the 2LT-II or would the answers/conclusions on which head to use be different between the two?

Thanks.

Yes, same head on both engines, 2L-TII & 2L-TE..supposed to be improved design over previous design.
New design suppose to be less prone to cracking between the valve ports.
Let us know how it goes!

Buy only Toyota OEM parts. Buy only the thickest head gasket (there are different thicknesses available). I'm pretty sure everything can be had from Toyota USA, but you can buy from Partsouq, Amayama, Megazip, or some of the cruiser parts suppliers around. This is the parts list I've sent someone before (below).

Here are the full vehicle manuals that you should download: Help!

Why do you want to buy the valve train parts? You should be able to re-use the ones from your old cylinder head. This will save you a lot.

Use the 2LTE/2LT-II cylinder head. It's a new improved part number and is better than the original. Both 2LTE and 3L were improved, but just buy the turbo version as you have the turbo engine.

I've done a couple cylinder head jobs on these motors before. If you have any questions just post here and I'll help.

Here's the part list for the cylinder head job:

11101-54121
Head Sub-Assy, Cylinder

Wow, you have no idea how much I appreciate this! Thank you so much.
Takes a lot of the headache away.

Thanks,

One more thing- I noticed your question about the valve train parts.

I have to buy new valves and camshaft and components for those as well(springs, rockers, and camshaft bearings)
-Because when my timing belt broke the pistons bent the valves and broke the camshaft.

So my question is-
Is the cylinder head that you sent me a bare head or a complete set?
I can also call the supplier to find out.

Thanks Again.

Hello, sorry I forgot your timing belt broke. The part number I posted is just a bare cylinder head. I can look up valve train parts tomorrow...no time tonight, sorry.

The pistons/rods/crank are ok even after hitting valves?

No worries.

There were a few tests done on the pistons and everything checked out ok.
I’m using advice that you told me in a previous thread and buying a big end bearing for the crank.

I know people have bought these heads populated with the valve train. I'm not sure what Toyota part number that would be. It'll be a lot more expensive.

If you want to look up the individual part numbers, just go here: Toyota LAND CRUISER LJ78 Car & Auto OEM Parts | 54926

Make sure to get the most recent 'replacement' part number if there is more than one.

I think there are some decent aftermarket 'loaded' cylinder head options too. But I'm not familiar with which are good and which aren't. 'All head' Australia was one that had a good reputation; not sure if they still sell these or not though.

No Toyota heads come “loaded”.

They are bare heads with only valve seats, bearing caps, pre-combustion chambers (if applicable) and valve stems already pressed in.

Everything else must be sourced and installed.

Here is a 1KZ cylinder head, for example.

Ok, good to know. After reading Onur’s post, I have started looking at “all heads” in Australia. I will call them and ask for details about the desired head.

Thanks.

this dude is great, sells a good product and stands by his product, I don't know him personally so its not a plug for his business, I've got one fitted to my rig- before I bought it and its been hassle free so far

Update- I reached out to both companies- All heads, and Kiwi cylinder heads. Both are out of stock of my desired cylinder head.

I am looking for a complete cylinder head kit, and there is no Toyota OEM complete kit.

Does anyone know about these companies (good, bad, reliable)-

Mr. Cylinder heads

GOWE

GDMR Auto Spare Parts

Or any other recommendations for a complete cylinder head kit for 2nd generation 2LTE?

Thanks.

@rookiecruiser , I would not obsess about finding a "complete" head with valves installed.

I would instead focus getting parts listed above and finding a competent Toyota mechanic in your area to do the work.
Installing new valves on a new head shouldn't be too hard for a good mechanic.

I was drawn to the complete heads because I was struggling to find oem valve train part numbers, as well as camshaft and camshaft bearings.

If anyone has these part numbers or access to them, would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

There is a company near where I live (Rocky Mountain Imports) that I think brings in loaded heads from Taiwan. I think they've been good quality and no issues to speak of. You could try contacting them?

Or maybe you could find a used Toyota head with all the parts in it? ie. someone else that bought a 'loaded' head to replace their cracked head?
