I have a 1992 Prado with the Turbo Powered 2LTE. Got the head Replaced. Used the Evans waterless coolant. The truck seems to have absolutely Zero ability to cool itself. Goes Very quickly to red high temp line and then stays there. The transmission has overheated and dripping transmission fluid a couple of times. Even coasting down hill the temp remains high. Is it possible that the thermostat is reversed? OR that the Original head was never replaced? (Turn's out the Mechanic has a drug habit). All thoughts and suggestions appreciated!

i don't think the thermostat could be installed backwords but it could be bad. it's pretty easy to take a look under the hood and see if the head is new. how hot is the radiator itself? The evens coolant needs a very through flush before it can be used, was that performed? any good shop should be helping you with the problem.

couple things to test that are free:

-next time its running up to temp, check the temps on upper and lower radiator hoses. one will be really hot and one will be really warm. if one is cold, then you have a blockage (bad thermostat, air, etc...)

-pull the thermostat and do the boiling water test to see if it is operating. or simply replace it and burp for peace of mind.

-not super familiar with the 2lte but I believe you can pull the thermostat and run the truck without a thermostat. doesnt really solve your problem but can at least see if the temp's drop.

any smoke from the exhaust to indicate cracks or headgasket issues?

remove the tstat y go normally, the 2LT(e...) has a a lot of cooling issues.
IDI Turbo diesel engine, has a bad life with summer, hot days plus hills etc....

Removing t-stat is NOT a good idea. It allows all the coolant to bypass the radiator and go right back into the motor.

To have such extreme problems, I suggest you definitely have a t-stat issue. Buy the newer 82C version.

Although arguably Evans coolant protected my motor from extreme abuse over the years, I've given up on it. I use regular water mix again. On average my coolants temps are much lower; but possibly there is more localized hot spots in the head.

From my many years of experience now, I believe the number one 2LTE killer is the throttle plate and EGR system. Remove both of those, and the motor is so much cooler and happy. Number two killer is too much fuel for the air. A bit higher boost and lower fuel is very nice for power and lowering EGT.

But again, your issue is not motor design, but something else that is really wrong to get so hot so fast.
