Replaced the speakers in our '03 100. Write-up including sub replacement (3 Viewers)

I did use the factory wires from the original amp, cut the factory plug off and connected my 4 channel amp under the passenger seat in the same location, all the wires are there. I have the wiring info if you need that. The amp for my subs behind that storage door on the lower right in the back. For the power, I ran a wire off my battery with a 50 amp fuse right after the connection on the terminal. You have to run off the battery direct unless you are connecting a very small amp. The wire stops under the passenger seat and then a 6 gauge wire continues to the sub amp. I wasn't sure if that was large enough for the sub amp but it was. You did a nice job with all the pictures and descriptions. How does your sub sound with the new speakers? I thought about doing that too but I wanted more bass, I have 2-10" Rockford Fosgate subs. When they are in the way, I just unplug them and take the box out, they have a quick release plug.
 
The sub sounds like you would think a 6" sub would sound. It provides good mid-bass supplementation, but it's no 10-12" woofer. I've got a few random subs kicking around from my HS/college days when I screwed around with audio stuff a bit more. I may get around to putting one in eventually, but it's definitely not a priority.
 
Promise me you didn't turn on Maroon 5 or Justin Bieber when you first fired this up and I'll like the thread.

But yeah, I tossed my stock receivers and was shocked at how much better an upgrade sounded. Glad someone went with Infinity, the product looks great.
 
I just put in the driver's door speaker. Infiniti 6032 (the cheapo's). I didn't want to wire up the tweeter and crossover. I can't believe how good this car sounds now! Incredible. The speaker was torn 95% around the outer edge. Almost completely gone.

I'll get to the passenger door tomorrow and the rear sub as well which is also a cheap Pyle. The sub right now sounds ok, as in doesn't sound blown to my ears, but hardly anything is coming from it so I'm sure the cheapo will help.
 
Yeah can you please post the wiring for the amp. That's the last step I need. Is going four channel then a single amp for sub the way to go or just a 5 channel amp?
 
On my 2004, I just finished doing my fronts - I went with the JBL GT7-6 - $70 for the set. I also picked up the S&G Tool Aid 87650 to help me with popping off the door.

These are 6-3/4" speakers. They did NOT come with a universal spacer and I couldn't figure out how to make it fit since the speaker housing isn't the same size as the factory.

I called Crutchfield and they me to drill into the plastic housing thingy but that looked stupid.

I came up with a GREAT work around.

The speakers have a standing seam around the outside of them.

I ground down the little things sticking up as the original poster did then, I notched the speaker where four of the bolt holes are and bent down the freshly notch part thereby making my speaker about an 1/8" wider at the locations I needed them to be.

Granted, the mounting screws are not in their own holes but this works great and saves a ton of time - no need to align the speaker and do any cutting of the door panel.

I have to do the passenger side tomorrow, I'll take a couple pictures then.

It sounds a HELL OF A LOT BETTER than stock. Both of the stock front woofers and the sub were completely missing all foam. The rear speakers were actually perfect looking, but I went ahead and replaced them anyway since I had purchased the speakers and figured out the install by the time I got to them.

It still doesn't sound like a concert hall inside, but for $180 in materials and 4-6 hours of work(took longer because of documenting the process, etc) I am VERY happy with the upgrade.

Great documentation of the install...two questions, do you still have the 2ohm factory amp? if so are the front speakers 2ohm or 4ohm, did it affect the sound output? thanks
 
Excellent write up. My brother and I both have 04 models and the speakers were obviously falling apart. Sounded like you could not get a good signal the speakers were so rotted. Did mine alone on Saturday in about 2 hours and his in about an hour with his help.

We used Alpine SPS 610c in the front and SPS 610 in the rear. Only about $130 for the complete set and they sound great. We found them on Amazon as a set.

We also both had the dreaded left rear passenger door SQUEEK from the door panel rubbing and fixed that too with information on this forum.

Great write-up and very helpful and easy to follow. Since I am a visual and Kinestetic person the pictures made it very easy for me to follow. This saved me about $700 from having the dealership do it. I would never have been able to do it without them. Thanks a ton.

On a 2001 you can follow these instructions for pretty much the entire install except for the rear speakers. When using the Infnity speakers the adapters wont fit properly on the rear speaker housing. However you can use a longer screw to drill the speakers into the housing.

What I felt was important to share is that I have confirmed that the Pyle PLPW6D(~$13 on Amazon) is in fact a very close match spec wise to the stock woofer. Both coils on the stock speaker ohm'ed out in the 3.4-3.7 range. The Pyle sub ohm'ed out at 3.4 on both coils.

The Pyle sub is slightly larger in diameter than the recessed mounting flange in the stock sub enclosure. I chose the unorthodox method of trimming the actual flange of the speaker until it fit into the enclosure. I am not endorsing this method yet until it has been proven a bit more long term.

Once the sub fit in the enclosure, I simply copied the wiring orientation of the stock sub(cut the wires off the stock sub and added spade connectors to connect to the Pyle) and reinstalled everything.
