While I wait on plating and powder, my hope is to get the bottom side of the body prepped for paint.. It's overall in good shape with only a few patches of surface rust towards the back, above the gas tank. There is some minor rot in the front of one of the rear wheel wells, but nothing else.

I'd like to figure out how to strip the existing undercoating so that I can start with fresh primer. See my other thread on that here. I'd like to get it down to metal, prime it, apply some Lizard Skin product for sound deadening and to protect from rock chips, and then I'll cover everything with fluid film once it's all back together.

here's a pic of the worst of the surface rust. This is above the gas lines & cover in the rear:

I'm currently gathering supplies for replacing my head (already got a spare head back from the machine shop), and let me tell you, scope creep is real. I could easily say "I got a couple of s*** valves" and end up doing a full frame-off resto because "I was in there anyway". So live the dream for the rest of us man!

Also, I appreciate your attention to detail in refurbing all the nuts and bolts. For my project - head, manifolds, thermostat, water pump - I was able to source all brand new OEM hardware - downpipe studs, water pump bolts, etc, etc, down to every last washer and nut. Two bolts were NLA, but the rest is en route. It's going to make a huge difference in reassembly I suspect, and will just plain look better. And no worrying about sourcing a broken bolt - I'll have it all here and ready to go. I love that level of thoroughness, even if it hurts the project budget.

Ha, thanks, happy to be living the dream. But it's also a bit of a financial nightmare... I'm starting to order stuff and finally seeing $$$ add up.

Do you have a part number for the two outer exhaust manifold bolts? I believe they're 14mm socket size? I think the ones I ordered back when I refurbished mine are actually the wrong part.

Nice work man, I'm super happy to have seen this rig in person and can't wait to watch it's progress.

I'm headed back to Seattle on Saturday to start dissasembling my turd for much of the same things you're doing. I learned a lot checking out how you pulled your body off.
Any luck getting ahold of Queen City Plating? I'll be dropping all of my stuff off to them in batches, they're just up the street from where I live. Happy to bring some of your stuff too.

P/N 91611-61028 should be it. Double check that on the diagrams at Partsouq or here.

PM me with your email. I have an 80-line spreadsheet of top end hardware P/Ns I can share.

I finally had a chance to get the last of the stuff for plating together and take some pics for a quote. Ill call them tomorrow and let you know. Thanks again for the offer.

You're right. I'm thoroughly impressed that you've gotten this far without an air compressor. Bravo, sir. This truck certainly should be called Lazarus. What color are you painting it?

OK, frame fixed.. Rot cut out and replaced with new metal. As expected, it wasn't too bad in the end and the affected sections was really limited to what you can see in the pictures below

We also got the new rear crossmember placed and welded in.

If anyone in Central Oregon is looking for a welder, shoot me a PM. I have a great guy who does good work quickly for a very reasonable price...

Dropped the frame off at the powder coater with the rest of the parts and will now get to work on the undercoating while I wait for that stuff to come back.

And parts have started showing up:

Excited to watch this go back together. You’re starting with such a solid foundation.

Curious did you hear back from Queen City Plating? I did with a much higher estimate than I expected….$600 or so for all of my hardware. Ouch!

I finally heard back after calling them today.. They want 1200-1600 for a job that Van Nuys Plating quoted $650 for.. And then called me back to say that he didnt see my other picture of parts and that it would actually be more.

Van Nuys has been great so far, super communicative.. Say the turnaround is 2 weeks, so I'll be mailing it all down there shortly.

I've never named my cars, but I think you're right.. Lazarus does seem fitting. Once day when I financially recover from this stage, I do hope to repaint it a new color... Definitely some thing 80's or earlier Toyota. Currently thinking either Cadet Blue or Olive Green.

I like the Olive Green

OK quick update... Got all my bolts, hard lines, and miscellaneous brackets packaged up and set off to be cad plated. FYI 44 lbs. of bolts alone go into the bottom of an FJ60. I chased the threads on all of them, but restrained myself from cleaning any further. I'm sending it all to Van Nuys Plating, and they said there was no point for me to do any degreasing or rust removing... Their processes take care of it all.

Then, I spent a day reorganizing and cleaning my garage. Now that I'm done deconstructing rust and grease, I want it all to be (relatively) spic and span for the reassembly.

And finally, my frame is ready.. Picked it up yesterday and it looks great:

Before I start adding anything back on I'm going to coat the inside with internal frame coating and then cavity wax or Fluid Film.

For now, I'm trying to get all the undercoating wire wheeled off the underside of my body. Not fun.

Curious as to how you get the inside of the frame coated?? I’d like to do that on my new 60 but have no idea how to adequately get in there.

I just ordered some eastwood internal frame coating, which comes with a 360 degree nozzle on an extension, you can pull it down the frame rails as you spray it in.

So stoked to see this progress man!!!! You're doing A+ work!!

I'm likely to pull my body off today. Wish me luck!

What is the approx cost for plating all of that hardware?

Thanks man, good luck. They quoted me $650 from those pics.

I haven't swapped the lines, but understand that should fix it. I'd like to get it working properly first and if that fails maybe I'll give it a shot.
mine was so gummed up before i swapped the lines that is pressurized the entire system such that when i removed the gas cap before a fill up gas literally shot out the filler neck and hit from neck to waist
