is this the heater valve pull?
image.jpg

a PO had hooked the choke cable to the heater valve in the engine compartment.

I believe it's for the cowl vent.

It should open vent door inside the cowl vent that's located below the windshield on the outside. That knob should be attached to linkages attached to the firewall above the heater.

just a fresh air intake? it sounds a lot like a flap door (like the sound the kick doors make when they open and close) but it’s in the firewall. must be the cowl vent then!! thanks

Yes fresh air. I raises a panel vertically inside the cowl vent housing. The linkages are mounted inside on the firewall.

Check out this link/thread from @steffan .

The "V" pull knob on the dash has a cable going to the fan housing on the passenger side. It operates a door in the fan housing which redirects air flow to the frt heater. Fyi, It has nothing to do with the cowl vent.

yep i’ve got that one all sorted and it works well. i just couldn’t chase that pull knob and next my dash with the heater in the way and the PO has done some weird stuff so i really don’t know what’s stock and what’s not. it’s amazing how different this 40 is from my 77 which i has gotten quite used to.

but one little thing after another and i’m getting it functional!! now i just have to sort out this new leak before we hit -20C!!

You can see the drain hoses in Steffan thread. The seam where cowl meets the base of the windshield can leak too.

i wondered that tonight. like i said though it’s been in the garage for the last few days and hasnt been in any moisture that could have leaked in. i took a kleenex and wiped up some of the fluid thinking it might show colour. it didn’t but it did have the clear smell of coolant. pretty sure i have a heater core leak. now i’m trying to decide whether i rebuild or buy a good used one. i’d like to just swap in easy peasy and be done but then the whole idea of used heater core longevity creeps in. i just know it’s going to get cold here soon and a heater will be needed!! i don’t want to go very long without it.

If it smells like coolant, then it's probably coolant.
The cowl vent can hold a bit of water if the pipes are blocked, so just because it hasn't been outside might not rule it out.

Try tipping some water in the top and see what happens - outside maybe

back ordered lights only took two weeks to come in. koito kit for $35 CAD!! even the guy at the desk had to double check to make sure the price was right! such a good value

Just think how much cheaper the kit would be if they didn’t include 4 feet of extra wire loom! :)

Where did you order?
from my local toyota dealership. there was a headlight thread not long ago with the part number. i gave them that and they ordered them. i’ll see if i can find the part number and add it to my thread here.

i’ve noticed i have a hissing sound when driving that goes away with braking. my brakes work fine so i haven’t really worried about it but as brakes are important i figured i should investigate it. i pumped up the brakes and then started the truck. the pedal got easier to push so the brake booster is working at least somewhat. next was to see if the engine ran differently after taking the vacuum line off and also listen for a rush of air taking when taking it off. no rush of air was heard and the engine didn’t run any different. when i plugged the vacuum line the engine almost stalled. looks like i tuned it to run with a vacuum leak 🤣. guess i’ll need a new booster. looks like city racer to the rescue once again!!
