Yeah, you made a good choice. I rather swap a engine, tranny & suspension any day over a new body. The thought of it boggles me, you would of need heavy equipment like a fork lift or a hoist the list goes on.

We side chated, but how long are you going to drive it stock till you start swapping suspension & armour over?
Did you have lockers or gears in the 94?
What will you do different this time?
I searched specifically for a locked 93 - 94 to make the project as easy as possible and I figure I could sell the elocker axles and recoup a good chunk of change. Prices here in CA were too high for a locked 80 that is not a basket case hence the trip to NE Oregon.
In will go my clean clothe interior and my axles wih 4:88's and ARB's.
I plan to start ASAP but first I need to determine what's going on with the tranny. Then I will strip it in preparation for the Bedliner I had planned for the one I rolled. Will liner it the 045 toyota white that's on it now. I'm slow so I expect this to take a few months.

How much extra did you pay for that?!
Oh, it was free along with floor mats, a full tank and thick dust in the AC vents. :)

Couple things......

Since you're in CA, if that isn't a CA truck, the 1993's seem to have the EGR temp sensor bypass built in, where-as the 1993 year had the EGR temp sensor for the CA models. Don't know if that's going to be an issue or not for emission testing, but thought I'd throw it out there.

My 1993 has a weird trans issue, and I'm guessing it's solenoid related. Mine won't drop into 1st after being in park. My solution is to throw it in reverse, move a few inches, then into Drive, at which point it drops into 1st. You may be able to get silly lucky like me (for now) by throwing it in neutral, then reverse.... or into drive, and then reverse....

Nice score on the vehicle, though! Sounds like a good price!
Yup...same here..I would replace my solenoids But solenoids are spendy.

I have one brand new Solenoid that I never ended up using from Toyota if you end up needing one.

Perhaps the best part is that the exhaust system does not whistle!!! :)
Something is seriously wrong with it. Return it ASAP. 1FZs whistle because they're happy and are 7 times better than the 3FE.

This is my third 80 and only the one I rolled whistled.
I pull codes 62, 63 and 64 from the tranny control unit today. Research tomorrow.
Apparently a friend of mine knows someone who knows a guy that found out who manufactures the solenoids and they can be had for like $50. Something else it does now is flare 200-400 rpm between 2 and 3 shift so I'm leaning toward just removing the entire drive train and installing the rebuilt stuff from my 94. I will have a functional set of elocker axles for sale in the future because my other set bass gears and ARB's which I prefer.

Second the share request. My A442F is having trouble finding first after sitting for a while lately.

Here is what I came up with concerning the transmission solenoids. Aisin and Borgwarner had a partnership from 1969-1987 and the AW450-43LE otherwise known to us as the A440/A442 was one of their creations. I found several sites carrying these solenoids which are one and the same for both transmissions and I'm sure for some others.
Cobratransmission.com has the lowest prices I found where they ranged from $48-$50 each.
Here are the part numbers:
Shift 1 solenoid- D49421A (5A-402) - edit: shift 1 is same as
Shift 2 P/N. See post #57.
Shift 2 / timing- D49422A (5A-403)
TCC lock-up- D49425A (5A-404)
The number in parentheses correlates but I believe it to be a 1998 later number.

Will do.

Very VERY good info.. thanks for doing the leg work.

I am not sure how valid this is anymore. Yes, previously BW were Japanese made, a friend ordered some 80 parts in early 2015 and it came from Japan. In the November, I needed some 40 parts, ordered some BW as they were the lowest priced and could be shipped the fastest and knowing that they are most like made in Japan, I went that route. I got them and they were made in Korea. Both parts :( It may be valid depending on the part, but you have been warned. Hope for JDM, expect KDM.

Even China out sources so I'm not surprised that Japan no longer has the capacity to manufacture parts for discontinued transmissions. The point is, we can get them for a fraction of dealership prices. The AW450-43LE / A440 / A442 was a product of the joint venture between Aisin Seiki and BorgWarner which ended in 1987 from which point Aisin continued production under their own name.

I found a discrepancy with the A442 solenoid part numbers I previously posted. Transmissionpartsus.com lists them this way and it seems logical: They list the Shift 1 and Shift 2 solenoids as D49422A, Timing solenoid as D49425A, Lock-up solenoid as D49421A.
Cobratransmision.com lists shift 2 and timing solenoids under the same number, to me this is less logical. I don't know which site is correct because I have not ordered and I may not because of the fact that I have an A442 in the 94 I rolled that operates very well and will most likely run it in the 93 replacement rig instead of monkeying around with the 93 trans that has shifting issues.

Just saw this, congrats! Awesome to see you back on the road so to say!

Can't wait to see the "swap" / build.

You may even make it to another snow run this year the way it keeps falling!

Thanks man! As slow as I am i will be lucky to make it on a snow run next year. I'm bad about the "while I'm in there" mentality. There are a couple threads going on that have me thinking LS motor/tranny of my choice "while I'm in there". :hmm:

This will be my "official" build thread since I didn't do one on my 94. I apologize because I don't think I ever made a proper introduction.
My name is Steve, I love the sierras ', landcruisers and my wife who does a good job of putting up with me.
So, I rolled the beautiful 94 on dec. 17 and wasted no time finding the "white Rhino" a month later, out of NE Oregon. There is high desert so the White Rhino has no rust but she is very dirty, as in, thick dirt anywhere gravity pulled it. No rust, no dents, a perfect rig for a guy with zero body work skills unless you include adding body damage. :)
I spent the very rainy winter preparing my modest two car garage for this large project and am now recovering from a minor surgery for a couple weeks before I can really dig in.
My sister comes out from the east coast the end of May and she wants to hit the Rubicon for a day trip. What can I say, I spoiled her three years ago when I took her clear through and back home in one day in the badest Dodge Ramcharger that ever stomped rocks. Btw, I had that truck for 15 years and it never once disappointed.
Before my surgery, I removed all the trim from the white rhino. Lots of leftover mud from the PO fun! This thing runs smooth and quiet at 268k.
I hope to get under this beast and get the tranny shifting properly by this weekend. According to the TCU it needs new solenoids so that's what I will start with.
