Hopefully I can answer any questions anybody might have about the cluster. I was lucky enough to get in on the pre-production run to get an early unit.

When I saw the UPS box, I thought for sure they had sent the wrong product. It was huge!! Here is a comparison shot of the box this ship in vs. the size of the cluster.

The cluster itself feels very high quality. Light, but strong. I think it would hold up fine in any rig with a hard, soft, or no top. The factory bezel covers all the screws and supports. Only one cable coming out of the back (cat 5), making mounting and removing very easy. The cat 5 goes to the brain unit, where everything else is wired.

The packaging was very impressive. Every component and wire was individually packaged and labeled. Almost everything was in a small box with bubble wrap in it.

The sender cables are VERY heavy duty. Weatherpak connectors on each, and nice insulation. All of the senders are solid state as well.

Somebody had asked about the extra modules. They are much smaller than I thought they'd be. They are about half the size of the main brain unit. I ordered 3 extra modules. An electric fan controller, a voltage/amperage module, and a pressure module.

One of the things I was most impressed with is the display. On their website, it is difficult to tell how clear and precise the display is, but the display is very easy to read, even with small text.

Overall, this is an excellent unit and a good value it you are planning on replacing your stock cluster. You can't spend a lot less and get nice gauges with a nice bezel. Plus, it won't be nearly as expandable. I'd say the biggest turn off for most purists (and some non-purists), is the backlighting color. I chose red, as I hate blue dash lights. White was not available yet, but might look better with an otherwise OEM dash. I also chose a black face because it will match the rest of my vehicle, but understandably, they will sell many more white face gauges for the factory look.

Calibration was really easy for the OEM fuel gauge, especially being that it is out of the vehicle. I am not able to calibrate the speedo yet as it is not running. Hopefully soon though.

I will update the thread soon with install pics. I am having some interior pieces powder coated this week, including the gauge bezel.

About the modules...

I had planned on doing a TMax dual battery kit. It had the solenoid with display for both batteries. But, I ended up not needing it because when I bought this gauge cluster, I was able to add the voltage module, so I can monitor the main battery, plus 2 more sources (either voltage or amperage). So I purchased a Blue Sea 7622 automatic charging relay to take care or the switching automatically, and I can monitor it.

The pressure module lets me monitor a few additional sources. You are able to choose what type of senders. I got one for air pressure to monitor my air tank, and also a fuel pressure sender.

The fan controller is pretty amazing. It has the low and high temp switches, but also a miles per hour cutoff so it's not on when you're above a certain speed. It also has an A/C input so it is on when the A/C is on, even if the coolant temp is below the cutoff.

The pressure and voltage module have programmable high and low alarms to alert you if something is outside of your parameters.

Very impressive and nice to have something expandable in the future . I'm a gauge whore and love to know every little detail of what things are doing , seat-of-the-pants is fine and been driving mine that way for quite awhile now but this is a real solution for my ocd ..lol .
So, I assume that the extra potential sensor readings are through the small display at the bottom and are somehow selected in the pod ?

Yes. There are two switches that are included, much like the trip and reset switches in a normal modern vehicle. They scroll through the displays at the bottom so you can monitor whatever you'd like. As you add modules, more options are available to view. They also get you into the setup menus. You can adjust everything, all the way down to brightness of backlighting.

Nice setup... If you don't mind me asking, what did you setup cost..?? Can you also adjust the background lighting or is it really pink... lol

I figured somebody might ask.... no, it's not pink in person. It is a dark red color.

I think it was around $1300 for everything. $800 is the base price.

I was just looking on their site... I noticed there are no blinkers in the gauges... Are you going to add external signal to your panel...?? They definitely are a nice alternative...I definitely like the RPM gauge setup in the cluster. I was trying to figure out a setup for one in my rig... Thanks for sharing this.

There are blinkers, and many other warning lights like high beam, brake, check engine. You can't see them when they're not lit up though, just like a normal car.

Very cool, looking forward to your rig Jetranger, when it all comes together. I might have gone this route before I bought my custom Autometer gauges.....

Cool... Wasn't sure... I definitely like the setup... Very clean looking...

looking forward to seeing your comments after using it for a while … I'd consider it … its not like its a huge departure from OEM from a looks point of view, more of an improvement to the status quo …
:)

I do have one concern - warranty period and how well they will stand up to extreme heat and cold . Mine is a work-duty vehicle and doubles as "rescue" duty for whatever/wherever needed . I chose the Cruiser because of it's dead-on reliability and simplistic nature . How well is the unit sealed up on the back and around the gauges themselves ? One of the issues I always get with vehicles is dust entry into things that can't take it over time , mostly from work sites as my vehicle is always right there nearby . I've even had odometers fail from dust clogging up the gears over time .

NICE!!!! Please get some pics of it installed, kinda want to see what it looks like behind the wheel.

$800 before shipping

Well I received my Dakota digital cluster yesterday and installed today (more pics in my build thread shortly). Impressions: Really nice unit. Tons of monitoring possibilities, really nice sending units and overall a well thought out set up. Looks sharp and very easy to read. Set up not too difficult. Installation not too bad if you are semi electrical inclined.

Problems- the wires from the speed pulse unit were WAY too short to reach to the control module, so we had to solder longer wires. Not sure if this is an oversight or they expect you to do this.

The tang speed adapter- supposed to fit where the speedo cable goes into the TC case and the cable part that turns goes into it to generate the pulse. Well, the end of the pulse unit is square, the tang adapter is round, meaning there is no way the pulse generator will mate with the tang adapter and generate a pulse. It just spins and you won't get a speed reading. The tang adapter needs to be "squared" to grip the pulse piece. We used hot glue to mate them and calibrate the speedo, which worked, but it stopped working on the freeway on the way home. Not sure if they sent the wrong tang adapter or what. Will call Monday. Doesn't seem to be crimpable either. No speedo for now which is a bummer.

Would be nice on the fuel gauge if they had it set up like the GM and Ford sending units. On those you just choose them in set up. For the 40 sender you have to custom set up to get good readings. The way they say to do this is to pull your sender out and measure ohms at full, 1/3, 2/3, and full. We didn't have time to rip the seats out and all that garbage, so we looked up ohm readings for the sender online (17-120 ohms) and used those (calculating 1/3 and 2/3) and input those. It's not working accurately as my old gauge read 1/2 tank, the new gauge read over 3/4 and I filled the tank and it took over 8 gallons which is half. We're going to borrow a sending unit and hook that up rather than rip everything out of the truck.

Had a very hard time getting the cluster to fit back in the dash with the new gauges installed. In fact, we couldn't get it to go back in. We ground two ridges off the black plastic piece on the bottom of the new cluster set to get it to fit. Everything else hooked right up and works great.

Tach, temp, oil pressure, and volts are all accurate. Calibrating the speedo was easy and accurate (used a gps so on iPhone to measure the mile). Hi beam indicator and turn indicators all work fine. Clock is nice! Not sure if the short wires on the pulse unit and the tang adapter that does not fit are simple oversights or not. I'll find out Monday I guess. I LOVE the unit and it looks fantastic. Just needs a few bugs worked out (minor things).
