***Update and project on hold for a while.
Upon dropping the pan I noticed a small o-ring. Looks to be a o-ring that goes between the cages and the transmission case. There is 6 o-rings in total. 3 orings for the cage that goes where the oil pump connects to and 3 for the cage in the middle.

The o-ring is whole and intact
So possibly it fell out upon sliding the cage in place.

This project is gonna be on hold for a while possibly a year now.
Due to me taking a new job in Thailand.

I’m looking possibly next year. If I can have a month off and some nice weather on my side to finish to come back and tour more of North America. I hope this thread helps.

Well that sucks. Congrats on the job, enjoy the adventure, this can wait!

update its been a couple of busy days... and my OCD kicked in could not sleep so I pulled the tranny out inspected it again finished around 4 am. the problem was rear clutch. it was out of spec and the clutches and plates got burned.

all o-rings were in place. and I'm glad I had spare parts kicking around.
The Toyota manual says 5 discs and 5 plates. I was able to get in 6 plates and 6 plates of steel for the rear clutch and all is well.

With 5 plates in there the piston was able to move too far and caused a groove. In the piston.

I have the same land cruiser and I'm also going to repair the transmission. Can you tell me which master kit should be bought? For a442f or a440f?

The dataplate on your firewall should tell you which transmission your truck has for sure. If it's the A442F and you have the "power" and "O/D off" buttons, then you have the newer electronically controlled version, if you don't have those buttons then it's the older fully hydraulic version.

I understand all of this and I have fully hydraulic version, but in this thread on a picture i see partnumber that suits A442F. That is why i'm asking - what p/n of masterkit, that author installed first.

Internal parts should be the same any local transmission shop should be able to assist you if you're not capable of doing it by yourself.
and the only difference you have in yours besides mine would be the solenoids and valve body but parts should be available local.

in theory, a 93-95 A442F should work if you want to swap in a used one but id rather rebuilds it and change everything so you know what is in it and throw in a heavy-duty valve body from wholesale automatics while you're at it.

according to Engine & Gearbox Information
1993-2001 uses the same

So! as a basic guideline to follow the process of the rebuild I have followed everything listed here by Wholesale Automatics

There were some variances and when I had questions wholesale automatics was there to answer them.
One of the questions that come up frequently is the use of the aluminum dowel which is no longer used and included with the extreme valve body kit.

Did you ever figure out what the issue was?
Sorry for the delay, life got busy. It turns out that half of my valve body was not torqued down correctly. I'm not sure if this was from Wholesale Automatics or heat cycling over time but the problem apparently persisted since the day it was installed. I torqued the bolts to spec and the trans is operating as it should.

Just wanted to share the A442F - Hydro FSM

@veiloctane how is she holding up? Fantastic build. I am learning how to rebuild transmissions at the moment and I want to be the Toyota tranny guy at the shop
Works better than new. Upgraded valve body and torque converter is a must

Anyone having issues downloading the fsm?
It keeps downloading like 11mb of the file and won't open it.

Works for me downloading on iPhone using chrome and I can open it. Not sure what the issue is.

Weird too, Everytime I download it the file size is different.

Using chrome on my Samsung. I'll try my laptop after work.
