I have been thinking about the viability of installing one of those pop-up style sunroofs in the rear section of my 80. Has anyone ever done this?

My truck is pretty old and has lots of miles...I'm not worried about resale and I think my kids would love riding back there.

I think it would be OK structually, but not too sure about highway winds (and birds!)... might need to install an additional deflector.

Any thoughts??

I think the ridges on the roof would pose the biggest problem

I wanted to do this to my 60 awhile back. I was thinking of cutting one of those huge sunroofs out of a old toyota van (the one that looks like a potato on wheels), and welding that in.

This one is an 86

I think mitsubishi had a similar van with a big sunroof too, cool idea:hillbilly:

I've often thought about this myself. Bunch new vehicle seem to have these now. I wouldn't do it unless a factory sunroof could be made to fit. Good luck. Please keep us posted.

Check out the FJC forum website. A bunch of guys there have put them in. The FJ has ridges. I think you just need to add some extra sealant. If it were me, and it may be in a couple of years, i would say go for it. Just take your time and seal the crap out if it.

the isuzu troopers have HUGE roofs to. Idk about the space available though. Does your 80 have the factory sunroof?

I would ping these guys at ASC. They do a lot of OEM work and may have a solution.

Back in the day when my dad had his 60, he had an ASC power sliding roof installed in his 60, and it looked and operated like an original OEM product - was very slick.
