I have a 1971 Fj40 with original drums on all four corners. The original motor was blown, so I swapped in a 2F with Trans and Tcase from a 1984 FJ60, eliminating my t-case parking brake. I am looking options to incorporate a parking brake without breaking the bank. Can the backing plates for FJ60 rear drums be modified to fit and early Fj40 axle? Or is there a cheaper option? I'm not overly concerned with performance, so the cost of discs doesn't seem worth it at the moment.

Interesting. I do a lot of research for parts like that by shopping the parts people that have a complete catalog with pic's and part #'s. Second is pay attention - usually the fitment is a range like 68 to 7/72, so even if the part # is the same for something outside that range doesn't mean it "fits". Third hard to tell what was done to rig in the distant past by PO's.

Then there is the issue of claims that its OEM doesn't mean its exactly the same.

Maybe install a hydraulic line lock on the rear brake line. You step on the brake pedal, then set the lock. Back brakes are on - Personally I don't trust emergency brakes, especially the new electric ones

I converted my semi float rear axle to new style 70 series drums. You need an adapter from fjco, backing plate, hardware kit, wheel cylinders, the rubber boots, the arm that goes on the plate for the e brake, drums, and shoes. Everything but the adapter can be sourced from Toyota. I think most of it crosses over to a 4dummer.

Then you'll need cables and a handle.

You'll have to pull the axle shafts to get the adapter and new backing plate on.
You have to drill into the axle housing your mount the adapter, and you have to grind a few places to create a flat for the fastener to rest on.

Then you need you'll to bend up a new rear brake line. You can tweak the original on the long side to work, but it looks like a two year old did it.

I still haven't gotten around to getting cables or a handle rigged up yet.... it's only been 9 months. Don't rush me. 😆

As I remember that adapter is not budget friendly.
Believe some of rear axle disc brake kit adapters used with GM calipers with hand brake. At one time 8/80 FJ40 axles were reasonable priced. Same with used 8/80+ 40 series full floaters from other markets. Most did not have a hand brake but 60 series backing plates and brake parts bolt right on. Need a 40 series cable and add a bracket for the cable to convert to hand brakes.

I thought @cruisermatt just did an install of a "kit" and a write up, within the last 2 months??

Either the FJCO adapter plates or just modify and install the entire FJ60 axle. Both good options

Thanks for all the help. I'll keep on the lookout for a later 40 or 60 axle then.

Is there no kit to put a disc or drum e-brake on the back of the splitcase ? I thought there was ? paging Georg ?

Yes that is an option.

Has adapting to rear disc and using GM calipers with the hand break been mention.

Guess it really boils down to what the original poster calls breaking the bank. To me not sure it's breaking the bank as much as knowing how cheap parts were at one time. $1K bought me three 8/80 40 series rear axles.

or buying entire 40 series for $1K
