new stuff

It took me about 10 hours to get this far. Receiver and axle spindles next, then I'll start on the arms. I'm not the fastest on the block and figure this project will take about 20 hours, granted that’s not all work time, some off it is wondering aimlessly.

How about them prices 4Runner!? A "kit" would be absolutely fantastic, and would allow others to add/modify/delete as needed.
Simple formula:

1 FourRunner Kit
+1 Welder/Hood/Grinder
= 1 Happy Cruiser w/ owner

be careful to promise too much. I was estimating 25 hrs for everything, including the paint. You would cut 4 hours each if you built 5 at a time. A couple more if you can make your drawings to incorporate brakes, eliminating a lot of welding and grinding

OK...here is the list so far of interested people (in the order of when they contacted me). I apologize, but I didn't get a chance to call the cutting shop today. For sure tomorrow. Let me know if you are not on the list and will throw you in. The more we have the cheaper these things are going to be.

1. Mapletonfj60
2. Smkymtn
3. GLTHFJ60
4. Commostud
5. FJ60Cam
6. DirtyLittleSecret
7. NVFJ60
8. Euclid
9. Calicruiser
10. PhilC64

Just so everyone knows...these things aren't like a snap together plastic model, but rather takes some finesse. MTN.GOAT, chime in to give your experience. I spent a lot of time with mine, but with MTN.GOAT's, I did make a fair amount of changes that I think made it simpler to assemble. I am more than willing to make simple changes, like if someone wants to have one with a tire carrier and without the holes, I can make provisions for that. When we get closer, we can get more firm plans of what everyone wants.

Well, I spoke to my cutting shop and it looks like it will be right at $300/kit (not including shipping). That includes the mounts (bent, with no holes - all frames will be slightly different and this will work better for everyone), top plate with two holes for the axle spindles, a receiver hitch reinforcement, and all the other plates needed to piece just the lower section (no tire carrier or axle spindle). If someone is interested in the swing out tire carrier, I could probably fab those for people and ship as a ready to install unit with spindle and all you need to do is weld the spindle to the bumper and attach the swing outs.

It takes some common sense, and it is labor intensive. Lots of hours welding and grinding. But like all things I could build a second one faster.. The reality of it is, you build yourself and save enough money to buy other cruiser upgrades or a welder if needed and the best part is when asked where did you get that bumper You chime in. “ I ordered the GUNSLINGER (what I call it) bumper kit and built it MYSELF”.

Honestly, that's a ripper deal so long as we can find a reasonable shipping method! We got a good resource (perhaps a group order is in order) for bumper accessories (ie: spindles, locks, and bumpers)? BTW: are the rear connection points the same for FJ62's as FJ60's? Me, I'd want just one swing out.

Boy...I am not sure if the rear connection points are the same. I would think so. To make this work, you have to remove the stock bumper mount in the rear. It is held on by three rivets per side. I used those three holes plus there should be three holes on the bottom of the frame. I used those as well. I think in one of the pics you can see that. I would assume the dimensions on the frame are the same, but have made provisions for slight variation in the frame for vehicle to vehicle variation. Mine and MTN.GOAT's was a little different.

Looks like this thin is coming together. Very cool.

Bunch of questions:

Would this include the tow points?

I'm not confident enough with my welding skills to weld this thing together. Thoughts on tacking it together, then taking it to a shop to have it welded? Would the pro welder be able to get to everything with the whole bumper assembled? Did you completly tack it, then go through and weld everything?

What was your source for the spindles?

Do you have a way to hold the swing arms out if the truck isn't level?

I'm not clear on the reciever hitch. What do you mean when you say receiver hitch reinforcement? Is that the box piece that the reciever hitch would slide into? I can't see in the pictures of your bumper if there is enough room to put a pin in through the reciever.

If I'm reading you right the kit would include the parts to get it to the the point in the picture below, not including the spindles themselves and not including powdercoating. Does that sound right?

Thanks for offering to do these for fellow cruiser addicts. Please don't take my questions as being picky. I've been invlolved in enough group buy's and co-ops that went bad to learn that more detailed the information that gets discussed before doing the deal helps avoid mis-understanding later.

Thanks again.

Very cool!

More questions...

Can I get it without holes for the swing arms?

Since this sits up higher than the stock bumper, and it blocks access to the tire winch, would I be able to cut a hole above the receiver hitch to get to the tire hoist thingy?

When do orders start shipping?:D

I wanted to look into shipping costs today, but got overwhelmed at work. I will post the individual kit weights tonight if I can. I will call around tomorrow as well for shipping costs.

Hope I can answer all your questions here. When you are talking about tow points, you mean the two things sticking out the back that have the large holes in them? Yes, those are included. Those go through the back plate and weld onto the frame mount. I actually welded those on every available square inch they touch since those are what will be carrying the load when using the truck to pull something.

If you aren't confident with your welding skills, then yes, take it to somebody to get it completely welded after you tack it together. That isn't a bad idea and is essentially what I did. Tacked it together and then when back over it and welded all the joints.

The hitch reinforcement is a section that is welded in the back that helps support the receiver tubing (the receiver tube slides through it). It ties the top plate (with the two big trailer spindle holes in it) to the vertical middle plate and the lower plate. The hole is in the back of the bumper. I just feel it is a cleaner look. Just to make sure everyone know this, I cannot guarantee the load rating of the receiver hitch. I am rating it to carry a bicycle rack and maybe two bikes. I did no load analysis on it and will not be responsible for someone trying to carry around a tandem axle trailer with a truck on it. It has been fine for what I use it for (bike rack).

What you get with the kit is most everything you see in the pic with the exception of the two spindles sticking out of the bumper and the white plastic carrier supports. I can get those, but not offering that yet. I am trying to work up pricing on a tire swing out system, but haven't been able to get the hub that slides over the spindle just yet. I will keep this thread moving so everyone is informed.

I have no issues answering questions and if anyone has questions they don't want to look stupid asking, just shot me a PM.

Thanks!!!

Do you think it would be possible to order the kit with a longer reciever hitch tube as a provision for making reinforcements for the hitch?
