I don't want to bolt the seat balts to sheet metal....

why not?

Correct use of reinforcement (like fender washers to spread the load and a backing plate under the sheet metal) should be fine. I mounted Crows 3 point harness system into the floor boards (sheet metal essentially) using Crows floor mounting hardware http://www.crowenterprizes.com/shop_details.asp?cat=Mounting+Hardware&prod=FLOOR+MOUNT+SET (plus I used a backing plate).

Also, which Con-ferr bench seat do you have? Mine (the one with storage under it) has holes/eyelets drilled in the back supports for the seatbelts to be attached.

I am not sure I would want to trust seatbelts to a bench seat, though. Floor-mounted with proper backing plates is the way to go. The nuisance is that the floor mounts restrict the usable space in the back.

photo of mounting into floor board. I can agree that it does restrict space to some very minor degree, but no other real great way to mount them.

anyway, as for the rear bench which is his concern, here is my confer bench seat
confer.jpg

there are mounting spots on the bench specifcally for seatbelts AND the bench is bolted to the floor with 5 bolts with backing plates... hella stout. so not sure why you would not trust belts attached to a bench? virtually every bench seat has belt attachement points, no.

the frame of the bench does not strike me as being particularly stout; just my $0.02

as far as space: I was talking about space behind the rear bench....... that becomes restricted with seatbelts mounted to the floor

well, mine is easily 5mm thick where attached.. that is pretty solid I would say. Plus, I would be hard pressed to think they would provide the eyelets for belt attachments if they wern't up to par? then again, I have seen weirder.

ah yes.. I would agree there. wouldn't want to tie in behind the bench like I did behind the front seats, BUT I would if I had kids back there. for shizzle.

yes, with any passenger, for that matter. I used the OEM lap belts from the front, since I won't be taking anyone on the rear bench at higher speeds anyway (rearely even have a rear passenger when wheeling).

I appreciate the advice. I will take a close look at my bench seat for the seat belt mounting holes. I don't have the extened storage box as shown in the bottom wantatlc picture - but I agree the box is of pretty stout metal.

I was thinking of (having someone with welding skills) fabbing up some dind of cross brace to tie into, but haven't got very far into that plan yet.. If I can tie into the seat frame - that might be a lot easier..

Why not a a suzuki sidekick, geo tracker, or Jeep TJ???

They are all fold and tumble and these particular ones are as wide as you can get. They fit snuggly between the wells, not like that one you posted!!

If you're set on going over the wells then forget this post.... ;-)

Yz,

You're probably correct in that we can forget the thread if we are talking of going onto the wells. My point early on was that I have 3 children and still wanted a fold and tumble seat b/w the wells if possible. This is b/c I like the room left when tumbled and not needed. I was hoping that someone would come up and say that this was fine and could be done. However, as time has gone by it seems pretty clear that the fold and tumble isn't really meant for 3...even if they are only children sitting on them. I hope that someone has another opinion or idea. Thanks for all of the help to all.
P.S. love the quote...was on that night it was posted. We all have out moments...

One would be the woman golfer saying that she likes to play w/ men's balls.

Have a good one.

I've got the Man-A-Fre rear bench seat shown in the link below. It's not cheap but it's damn well made and weighs a ton. It has seat belt mounts made into the base and once you secure this seat, the seat and belts aren't goning to budge. I searched high and low and wanted something that looked like it belonged there. Like all Man-A-fre stuff, it's expensive but when you get it and mount it, it's well worth the money. It will fit 3 adults "normal" adults no problems and 3 kids will be a cinch. I got nothing bad to say about this thing.

this bench is sturdier than the Con-ferr model

used toyota forerunner rear seat and belts across fenderwells ran angle iron behind it atacted to rollbar for seat belts used 4runner belts dont lose any room pile stuff under it and on top of it put net acroosed it and store a lot of stuff under there keeping kids safe put a 94 blazer front and long rear it will fold down in wifes 69 she loves em and there leather plus heat and full electric also installed visors and lighted mirror happy wife good luck do whats best for you

I used the third seat out of an older suburban. It has arm rests and three seat belts and can also tumble and flip forward.. Because my tub is fiberglass I have to do everything off the frame. I haven't finished the final fab work yet but hope to have it done this summer. I had my three nephews in it ages 7, 8 and 8.

From a Plymouth Voyager, two shoulder belts on the sides and a lap belt. I want to put a shoulder belt in the middle now that my littlest one is out of the car seat. Works well, tight squeeze, they still fight about room.

Once again, thanks to all. This has given me a few more ideas to check on. I'd love to see a few pics if you have them Shelfboy and DiHardBowti or anyone that has some.

I'll try to post a few when I get it done. Gotta change the fronts this weekend.

Thanks again.

Ultimate Test...

Ok, I think that something along the lines of the Man a Fre or J**P seat will work for three as I've witnessed the ultimate test (for the seat and suspension). I saw three VERY large :o ...er...um... short for their weight ladies in the back seat of a J**P today. I KNOW three small children should be able to fit!

The distance b/w the wells is ~ 41" and someone said to check into the old Bronco seats. Tom's has a description of a fold and tumble that is 40" that will make the wells. At 40" it will also fit my small clan. Gonna look into it. The search for an old one goes on.

It's urs if you want it. You can't hurt it...and if so..it's usually easily fixed.

The Bronco seat from Tom's Bronco Parts fits to the mm. I'll post a few pix when it's done.

Gotta find a few 3 point belts at the junk yard.
