did you try Kurt? cruiser outfitters, he's alittle bit away but probably has some.

you could try to message Poser, he'll tell you exactly what you can and can't do....but if you are trying to pull the front diff to put it on the back, (going to two wheel drive) why not just drop the rear shaft and run in 4 wheel on the front wheels to get home etc?

Since you edited :D
They drove ~40 hours to get to Moab, That would put a lot of stress on the front axle, Which if stock would be a low pinion front axle, What it means is that it runs on the "technically" weaker side of the R&P, Which could leave you in worse shape than before, I am unaware if you have ever heard about NOT backing up while pulling in an 80 series, Its the same principal its working on the weaker side of the R&P.
Im sure they will get it fixed up.
Have fun all

 I wouldn't think they drove the 40 all the way to Moab in 4-wheel-drive

Sorry guys, I should have been more clear. We were able to get the truck back to camp. (full floating rear axle, we just pulled the rear shafts and driveshaft then drove it back to camp)

You can pull the front and run it in the back - but that's not our current dilemma. We're looking to replace the third member so that we can get back onto the trail and make the most of our trip. It was a long drive, and the trails are amazing. I'd really hate for our friend to be broken in camp after only his first day of driving.

We have all sorts of spare parts with us - but no differential. On the East coast wheeling we're accustomed to it's extremely rare to twist a pinion in half like this - there just isn't enough traction to do it. Normally broken pinions are caused by axle wrap, but in this case there was no wrap involved (truck has functional anti-wrap bar), the splines of the pinion just twisted right off. Honestly, it wasn't a break we were expecting.

We have a call in to Kurt, hopefully he can help us out. I don't know how far he is from us. I think Jeremiah at Proffits is only about 2-3 hours from us as well.

Ideally we need an FJ62 diff because it has the 4.11 ratio, fine spline pinion (stronger than the coarse spline we broke) and a round flange that can be rotated 90* and re-drilled to match our driveshaft flange.

Alternatively any coarse spline 4.11 ratio cruiser diff will work (40/45/55) and we can re-use the pinion flange - though it would be better if we had one with the correct pattern and didn't have to re-use the damaged pinion flange. The pattern we need is 2 3/4" by 2 3/8".

We can drive to get the parts, the closer the better in the interest of less down time.

Thanks guys - we really appreciate the response.

Good to hear you guy's are getting it worked out, I hope Bill didnt get you too excited when he showed up with a transmission instead of a diff.

No, Thats not what I was getting at, They drove to Utah, They have to drive back, However driving it back via the front axle is a bad idea.

I have one in Vegas.
But 7 hrs away and no good way of getting it to you...

LOL! That's funny. We did!!! It was still cool meeting him and checking out the big pig.

Guys - thanks so much for the support. We were in fact able to pick one up from Profits which turned out to be not too far away. When we got off the trail we set up the detroit for our buddy and had it back in within an hour.

While Scott ran to Profits we ran Poison Spider/Golden Spike/Gold Bar Rim. I got signal from the top of the mountain and saw I had messages but my battery was too weak to get a call out. Thanks to all who responded - just goes to show you can't beat the ih8mud community for support when you need it.

Looks like it's off to Pritchett canyon today... let the carnage begin!

Glad to hear all turned out well and you were able to get some parts

Hope you received my message btw :D

I did Kurt, thanks. Signal wasn't good so I wasn't able to retreive it until after Scott was en route to Profits. I was planning to call you personally on the drive home but ran into a little excitement there too...

Guess I should have brought spare parts for the tow rig, eh?

So it looks like I'll be spending a few days in Albuquerque...

It's a bit of an unexpected delay but I'm trying to make the best of it. I off loaded the FZJ40 and posted a thread in the High Desert Cruisers forum to see if anyone wants to go wheeling this weekend while I'm here. :)
