My fuel pump is leaking from the Vent hole. The car was just sitting and I started smell fuel and I went out to the garage and found fuel poring out of the hole. I removed the fuel pump and both gaskets and the spacer are there so the pump looks fine. The pump was replaced by the PO about 4000k miles ago. No previous history of fuel leaking in this manner.

I pulled the pump and pressed the pump arm and fuel came out both the out and the vent hole.

What would cause the pump to leak from the vent hole and has anyone else had this happen? Is this just a defect or is there something that would cause the pump to fail?
 
defect/ faulty parts.

not all parts are created equal. if you go to a chain auto parts house, they normally have 3-4 differently priced part numbers for any given part. with ''them'' price directly reflects to quality of the item received......and even the ''top'' dollar items are not super great top panda quality...but they get you by.

the problem you have is a clapped out diaphragm, time to replace the pump.......agian.
 
Any other thoughts or input or is the concensis that I need to purchase a new fuel pump?

If yes any expereince with Spectors used fuel pumps? Or should I just spring for a new OEM one?
 
Go buy a good oe pump. Or, now is a good time to go electric.
 
there's no way around it, you are putting a pump it.
the dia is shot, the gas getting past can go two places.
1. out the vent and into the engine bay
2. into the engine and dillute the oil
neither of which will have a good out come.
 
Just pick up a Carter brand pump from Advanced Auto Parts. Rumor in the 40 section that there is a shiny new Toyota pump inside that Carter box.

The material that the diaphram is made of fatigues over time. Once a pin sized hole develops the pump is finished.

Cool Cruisers has a fuel pump repair kit listed on their web site (diaphram, gasket etc.) but says that stock is limited. I've been calling since March and have been told that they are still waiting for the kits to arrive from Japan. Last time I looked OEM replacment ran around $115 and after market was $50.

Don't forget to replace the insulator between the block and the fuel pump.
 
If you do decide to go electric (and I wouldn't), you will need to install a psi regulator and set it to spec.
 
my fuel pump actually leaked/sprayed engine oil when driving and engine was turning > 2500 RPM...get a new Toyota replacement from one of the TLCA sponsors...
 
Some of the earlier pumps were rebuildable. They had a ring of bolts holding the halves together. The later pumps are crimped closed and the diaphram can not be replaced. I've never had a problem with a NAPA pump. I have also wondered why anyone would choose an electric pump over the stock mechanical pump.

i lost a motor over a stock pump ONCE and im sure i should have paid more att. but the reason is as im sure you know if a hole gets into the diaphram gas takes a route straight into the motor:cheers:

My pump is crimped closed so no rebuild here. I went to advanced and got a carter pump. It comes in today. My only worry is that it seamed as thought the tank was creating pressure and even with the fuel pump off it would spray fuel out the lines. And only when I took the gas cap off there was a large release of air and then it would not leak. Not sure why its doing this however I think it is what lead to my early fuel pump failure. Any thoughts of the building of pressure?
 
yup, worked for me, Carter with OEM in inside, think others have found the same, cost was like $50

Check the VSV (vacuum switching valve) on top of the carcoal canister. It's suppose to absorb gas vapor when the engine is off as the gasoline expands in the tank then release the gas vapors into the carb when the engine's running - kind of self re-charging. The built up pressure is probably pushing liquid gasoline through a hole in the fuel pump diaphram that's so small you never would find it otherwise. There's a way to clear the canister in the FSM if it becomes blocked - or your canister may have died.

The only problem is I don't have access to compressed air so cleaning the charcole canester does not look like an option. :( I am going to look around and see what they run either used / new.
