Rattlesnakes are out again

First one this year

Walked past one on the gateway loop trail in the McDowell's last week. Thankfully it was cold and moving slow

Rattlesnake imitator?? Who knows what this is? Found at 6600’ near Winona, AZ, just warming up in the road. Length as seen, about 3” shorter than the inner track width of an 80 series 😆

Had this one at our cabin in 2018 after the Tinder fire. Was at least five feet long

Thread in this section says Gopher/Bull snake.
This showed up last summer.

Only rattler I've seen in Northern AZ was a Black Tail rattler. That was at the base of Turkey Mountain.

Not a rattlesnake based on the head and tail - most likely as @Living in the Past mentioned is a bull snake. Keep them healthy to keep your rats at bay.

Gopher snakes, aka mock rattler. If you piss them off, they coil like a western diamondback and hiss while they move their slender tail rhythmically - it will fool even the best hiker into thinking it's a rattlesnake. They're good snakes to have around.

I've already been called 2× to relocate rattlers in my neighborhood. Everybody knows if I'm available, I scramble to relocate them to the wash because most people just kill them with a shovel. I think my record was 8-9 in a season. The local Desert Herptelogical association does call-outs for a $100 donation.

Saw a spitting cobra in downtown Flagstaff the other day...

This popped up the other day and thought it was cool, till I looked closely at the picture.:( Being so rare I would
have dropped it in a bucket and donated to the Desert Museum or at least hauled it out somewhere North
of us and released it.

in Fountain Hills, the fire department will come out and remove rattlers, but not other snakes - for free

they came within less than an hour after I called - last year

I don't know about other towns/cities

No need to remove any other snakes - I encourage all other snake species to hang around the house - it helps (a little) to keep the diamondbacks away :bounce2:

we have king snakes around the property (although I have never seen a full-size adult in 10 years; a small one once invaded the house and after a short chase decided to hide under a kitchen cabinet; we don't know what happened to it after we quickly taped shut all the access to that space; no stink :hmm:)

over the years, I have collected all the intact molts I found in the yard, and they are on display shelves around the house now :hillbilly: - freaks out most of our visitors
