The SAGA continues. Before we head down to Sedona we’re staying in flagstaff for two days. Are there any cool forest roads or trails near by worth hitting before we head down to broken arrow? Appreciate the suggestions

I don’t know about much wheeling per se in the area (it tends to be a flat plateau!), but there’s plenty of dirt. I think the area by SP Crater and Sunset Crater…that whole volcanic field is cool. You could go east to Winona and then leave the highway and make a counterclockwise loop mostly on dirt roads, most FS roads. Could go as far north as Red Mountain Geologic Area, and the short hike into the crater is worth doing. I’m not a geologist so I may have some terms wrong here! When ready to go to Sedona you could go down by Mormon Lake and then take FS roads west (maybe end up on FR 226?) … cross the highway (I-17) and take Schnebly Hill Road down into Sedona. That road can be busy but it’s a beautiful approach. Sorry if you knew all that but those are my suggestions.

Hart Paire is a nice area and dirt. Kendrick Mountain area has some nice trails. This area is not as flat and the forest service road to top of the world that flat most the way from Flagstaff. Forty years ago the Weatherford trail offered the best views in the area you could drive to.

Forest Rd 231 (Woody Mtn Road) south from W Route 66 in Flag towards Edge of the World. Any south-traveling spur road in the last 1.5 miles before the lookout tower is worthy. Not technical at all, but air down as soon as the road turns to dirt, and enjoy the ride.

We enjoyed it yesterday (my son ready to heave the football😉)

Might be too late here, but a drive up to Lockett Meadow is always stunning. Because we are currently in endless Spring here in the Valley, I cannot comment on road/snow conditions because there is margarita on my glasses, and I can't see the weather app on my phone.

Interested in hiking through some lava tubes? Trail 245 takes you to a large flat area with a rocky depression you climb down into and about 1/4 mile of lava tube. There's no way to get lost inside, as even if you take one of the forks, they meet up again. If you've been in lava tubes before, it's all the same scenery!
