Rattle on start up (1 Viewer)

When I first start my truck I get a rattle. It goes away after a few seconds. I presume that this is the time it takes for the oil pump to get oil from the pan to the top of the motor. Am I correct or should I be looking deeper into this? The oil level is fine and so is the oil pressure.

Are you using the big filter or the small filter? With the big filter I noticed more rattle on start up. Probably a combination of anti drain back and the filter needing more oil to be pumped into it, before making its way through the motor.

Ive got the big K&N oil filter on it. Not a big deal just curious if it was normal or not.

Yep pretty normal from what I have seen with the big filters. If you don't need extended service life I would go back to the small filter. But I am sure the difference is nil.

Thanks for the insight, im running 10-30 right now and im switching to 15-40 on the next change. Ill switch the oil filter as well then too.

I am running 0w40 Mobil 1 just because its what I run in all my other cars and it works well. No rattle and good oil pressure.

Also it's been found that using the Ford 90* adapter for the oil filter eliminates the rattle as well by turning the oil filter upside down and thus holding oil in the filter regardless of length of time the truck sits.

This is a new one on me. Ill search some threads and try to find what you are talking about. By the way I should've mentioned in the beginning that this only happens when the truck has sat overnight.

My '96 rattles for a few seconds on start up (running the big oil filter) too. I never thought much about it until last night... I pulled the lower pan to reseal it. I found a bunch of aluminum chips and flakes in it from what I guess is the timing chain rubbing on the timing cover.

I'm not sure if I should worry about the aluminum debris, but I will run the smaller filter from now on.

Yeah mine has a small "rattle" on startup too. More of a deep rattle, not a tangy one. Basically sounds like the valve train doesn't have enough oil on em first.

Might switch to a thicker oil @ cold. Even though Toyota recommends 10w30... I always get confused... is a 0w30 thicker at startup? I think 0 weight = thinner.

IIRC the rattle is from the timing chain tensioner not being "charged". i think theyre tensioned by oil pressure. mine does it too

If my truck sat for 2-3 days I would get the awful startup rattle on my '96 truck. Fixed the oil pump seal (mild leak) a couple of weeks ago and haven't had the startup rattle since. I'm guessing the leak was allowing air into the oil pump. It didn't leak oil when it was sitting, only running. YMMV

My truck used to do this, it has all but quit since I started using 5w30 synthetic. Its primarily what I use in all my street cars. There is no reason to run thick oil in these trucks. 0W-30 would be an even better choice. I run that in a bunch of my customer cars.

I learned many yrs ago to only use Toyota oil filters. On all the 22re motors I've had if anything but the toyota filter was used it would sound like marbles in the motor for 5-10sec....A old timer shined the light to use ONLY toyota filters. I have done so ever since that day without issue.

You have to figure if you start up your rig everyday...multiple times even that little noise might not be a big deal now. A few yrs and many miles later something will be broken. Mr. T parts are a must for quite a few items to ensure the longevity on the vehicle. Most aftermarket parts are JUNK.

On the 80 I use the small size filter and no startup noise at all. I also use 15w40 oil (mostly to help with my bad valve stem seals)

Wow, that adapter is spendy. Anyone have a link to a decently priced one? Or is that just what they cost?

You might find them on sale, think I paid about $80 shipped. I looked high and low comparing many different adapter models and styles and this Ford-Racing adapter was the only off the shelf bolt on solution I found. The best part is that installing this adapter is as easy as changing a filter.

Is the adapter really needed if the oem filter is used? Do some rattle on startup even when using oem filters?
