Here comes my biggest complaint about my Gamaviti rack. The little bracket holes I had added to the expo bars where I bolted the lights was kind of ridiculous. Its impossible to get any tool on the backside because of how close the hole is to the bars. I ended up having to hold the backside bolt with a pair of pliars then twist the lights/bolt until it got tight. In doing that, I pulled off a bunch of powdercoating, which brings me to my second complaint. My rack is rusting all over because of how bad the powdercoating is. Its beginning to rust in the crevices where the mounting platform meets the bars. It scrapes off with a fingernail too. I would probably think twice about having them powdercoat it if I still lived in the NE.

Mine has been on my truck now for ONE DAY, just sitting while I wait for the time to finish getting it straight and tightened down, and it's already rusting from the joints....what's worse, it rained yesterday and now it's dropping rust on my roof.....it's giving me pause about finishing the install or pulling it off to paint or re-powdercoat.....not very happy about this.....I need to contact Tim about it...

yeah, its pretty awful. I'll probably have to pull it off in the next few years and have it redone which won't be cheap. For now I'm using scrub pad and some touch-up paint to try and keep it under control.

Its interested you guys are having those issues with the rack. I've looked at mine after seeing your comments and the only issues with the finish is where I've scratched it up mounting and dismounting my RTT. I need to get those couple spots cleaned up and painted over but haven't done it yet. It makes me wonder why I'm not seeing the same thing as you guys when I'm sure mine was coated in the same batch.

Oh, and thanks for the envelope. I haven't seen it yet but I'm excited, since the recovery its felt naked without my stickers.

Sorry to hear about the powder coat issue!
Have you contacted gamiviti about the coating?
I'm sure he would take care of you.
From my expierance with powder coaters, most just don't seam to care about their work!
I have literally only had 1 bumper that was coated right the first time, every other I have had to make them recoat it.
It's frustrating to say the least.
You put a ton of time into bringing a high quality product and the powder coater dosnt share the same concerns for quality.
Definitely contact Tim and let him know what's going on, he is a great guy and I'm sure he would like to know if there is issues so he can corect it.

I'm having the same issue with my Gamivity rack. I'm planning on removing it and most likely just rhino line it.

*edit*. Just for the record. The rack itself has been awesome.

Thanks Ben. I just emailed Tim. I don't expect anything from him but since a few of us are having the same problems, I think it's smart to let him know so maybe he can switch coaters or have a talk with his current one.

I hope I can find a decent coater for my dissent rear!

Yeah, I know I would want to know it there were any problems with my stuff. It could be as simple as his coater hired a new guy that dosnt know what he doing. I have had that happen with my stuff before, I finally had my guy trained with how I wanted my stuff done and what I expected, then he gets hurt on the job and was on leave so they put the new guy on my bumpers that did a very poor job.
Luckily I only coat bumpers that are being installed or picked up locally so was able to catch it before any customers had to.
I have all my stuff coated with a zinc primer first and then the color goes on, so far this has eliminated any rust issues. I recommend you have the zinc primer applied when you get the bumper coated as well! And make sure the coater lays it on thick in all the cracks and crevasse! Bring a light with you to inspect the bumper before you take it home, don't hesitate to make them recoat it if you find any thin of light spots.

Need a rough texture for the zinc. Pretty much all my oilfield QC engineered specs for exterior powder were:

SSPS-SP6 blasting
Zinc Phosphate wash (if they skipped this or didn't offer it.. the parts were pulled from that shop and we found another to do the work)
Zinc Primer
Powder

One bad spot and the entire system is ruined. Rack and bumpers are bad in corners, under edges and anywhere two pieces are butted together and not welded (almost guaranteed this area will rust, even with the best prep) I had shops reject the parts for butt seamed joints that had to follow specs.

I've actually had better luck with paint over powder on bumpers and racks.

I did the same, mostly for the same reasons.

He did offer to help, but after your response and his similar recommendation(if I didn't want to re-coat), I'm going to opt for the touch up.
The spots are very small, mostly where the grid meets the cross bars and a couple spots where the mounting plates butt up, but are not welded(like @reevesci mentioned). They lend themselves to touch up easily and are not in conspicuous locations.

I have not had any issues with the zinc primer and smooth finish? My powder coater hates butt joints as well but with the 2 coats he can typically fill them.
On some of the tight spots he will actually pre heat the parts first so the powder will melt on contact.

If it's the joints that are rusting one thing I have done in the past is fill the seams with black rtv or even better would be a automotive urethane seam sealer.
I even like to do this on any unwelded butt seams inside my bumpers after powder if it looks like they didn't get 100% filled.

Installed the eBay snorkel. Really happy with it, especially for $70. Its really strong and the hardware is nice. The only thing I changed was using nutserts on the 3 A-pillar mounts instead of the rivets. Im sure the rivets would work fine, I just like the nutserts a lot morre.

First thing to do us tape off the area so you can mark the holes using the paper template. I didn't get any photos with the template but it's pretty straight forward. Just line up the top and door edges then use a marker to mark the holes.

Before drilling any holes, remove the air box, the attachment that goes into the fender, and the inner wheel liner. I didn't entirely remove the liner because it's a pain to get the plastic tabs behind the side molding.

Also, in my 06 there's a hole in the air box for water to escape. I sealed it up with some RVT.

Now to make the holes. I spent about 3 hours procrastinating and doing anything else in the garage that I could find to do just to avoid picking up the drill. It was extremely nerve racking. I started with a small drill bit for the bolt holes which made making the big hole easier. Once you make one hole, there's no turning back. Easier to start off small.

Next up is the A-pillar mounts. You have to install the snorkel then mark where the A-pillar mount sits on the pillar. I had to bend my snorkel a bit to get it high enough on the pillar to not interfere with the door opening. Not a huge issue but annoying.

Once you mark it, take the snorkel off then line the braket up to the marks you made. Then mark the holes and drill.

Then use either your rivets or nutserts. I covered them in RVT so they would be waterproof and keep water out of the A-pillar. Be careful as my middle bolt wouldnt go all the way in because something inside the A-pillar was blocking it. I ended up having to cut the bolt a bit shorter to get it in.

Last thing to do is paint the holes you made to prevent rusting then install the snorkel. I had issues getting the studs through the fender without scraping the paint so I put some RVT around the studs on the snorkel so when it presses against the fender, it covers any bare metal.

Rami your truck is looking super awesome man, nice work.

And sorry you, and a couple other guys, are having issues with the powder coating. Also sorry for the slow responses this week, I've literally been on another continent- but getting caught up now though. But as I said to you in email (Jeb also) let me know what I need to do to make this right.... that includes helping buy some spray paint, sharing the cost to get it PC'd again, or just  to deal with this, you tell me. The quality hasn't always been like this, I have already been in contact, sounds like there was maybe a process break-down, or we just need to do better prep work.. you're not the only one frustrated here, but do know I am addressing this.

Anyway we can get this thread back to more or less on track here and get back to your build, please feel free to email me anyone else who wants to talk powder coating on your Gamiviti rack.

Hey Tim! Thanks for the kind words. Im honestly not worried about it though. Im pretty rough with it anyway, so touching up areas here and there isn't a major issue. Luckily I don't live in WV anymore and instead live in NM so I don't anticipate anything more than just simple surface rust.

All-and-all, the rack is fantastic and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again. The expo bars are so nice for when you have to climb around the truck set the RTT up.

Seeing those pictures makes me want to hit a bank so I can get mine up to speed. Thanks for sharing the process and letting me know how mine will look down the road. (Stickers arrived but I haven't been able to get them installed. Thanks!)
