Love my BJ-44, and I am benefitting from the Armstrong steering biceps and deltoid power blaster program, but I am interested in power steering.

So, what are the best non-minitruck power steering conversions? (Please refrain from posting about how great a mini-truck conversion is...that is not my question).

Who has done rack and pinion conversion?

I have read of Ford Astrovan rack and pinion. Who has done it and what is needed?

Finally, can I turn a rack upside down to make up for the fact that I have a Right hand drive?

Best and thanks in advance,

T

Would you mount the Rack and pinion on the axle? Just thinking that is it was on the frame you would have alot of alinement changes with the axle travel.

Power rack and pinion mounted on the axle.... how intriguing. :hmm:

How would you connect the steering column to it?

I guess I will need to look at my Durango more closely, as Dodge Durangos have solid front axles and rack and pinion steering.

Poser, thanks for the pics.

I am RHD, so all these options without a rack are useless to me, as my steering wheel is on the wrong side, UNLESS SOMEONE HAS A DEAD PARTS CAR AND CAN GIVE ME A FREE FIREWALL, GLOVEBOX, AIR DUCTING, AND PEDAL ASSEMBLY FROM A lhd VEHICLE. i GUESS i WOULD ALSO NEED THE STEERING BOXES FOR LHD.

I guess I would need an entire firewall with ducts and pedals should I attempt a swap, AS WELL AS ALL STEERING BOXES. :(

That is why I am looking at rack and pinion.

Best,

T

The astro van powerbox would probably work. It would be mounted on the outside of the frame on the right side. Pitman faces forward. Shock tower might be a problem. Would probably have to use the ford shock tower. Drag link would be from the right side to the left. Scout would probably work mounted on the inside of the right frame. Don't think you would have shock tower problems. Engineering in my head sometimes gets me in trouble.

seems like you could use the steering box out of a K5 Blazer because it mounts on the outside of the frame, or the box out of old GMC trucks would work, my 1966 GMC 4x4 has the box that's reverse of the box I got to put in my FJ40 so it seems like it would work for right hand drive, dunno has anyone heard of this?
