In the process of starting a 1HZ conversion on my 62 series. I have a predicament though - I want a 5 speed. My 62 is really nice and I am concerned about the hole in the floorboard where the auto shifter is currently located. So I wanted to see what my fellow MUD members have done in this case. Anyone got any photos? I really wouldn't be concerned so much but my current interior and carpet is so nice.

an fj60 carpet or floor kit works. I just put in a Trail Tailor vinyl kit. lota work but will work and look great. Having gone to great effort to keep the boots tight to the floor, I have realized it might have been a better approach to overcut for the shifters and then fabricate a shifter tunnel mat that was hemmed around the edges, and covered any blemishes(extra holes, over cuts) while at the same time making it infinitely easier to access the shifters, and trans tunnel hatch. I've actually been mulling over exactly how to cut it and what type of material to use all morning long. I can't imagine it would be hard to make it look like it came that way, just have to be careful with color choice.

I had my auto swapped for a 5spd, I love it makes the driving experience so much better, (5 more miles per gallon too!) not sure if its comparable to what you'll have in there, meaning the gas to the diesel. I'd love to do that swap as well. I have Trail Tailor carpet kit but I still need to install it. I'm waiting for it to warm up. I reinstalled the original carpet until then. I just melted the edges so it would run on me. I can post pics of what it looks like now if you'd like?

i have a trail tailor kit as well because i did t like the carpet hole and the foot rest pad hole. good thing my trunk carpet needed to be rocked too so i replaced them all. i have a metal plate with a rubber gasket that fits over the hole left from the shifter and the carpet covers over that. i picture would only show nice new carpet around the new shifter. it won't help with the blank plate that covers the old shifter hole

Get a new front carpet from Trail Tailor. Or a whole new carpet set.

THe only hole will be a hole in the carpet.

When you do the 5 speed swap, you swap out the metal shifter plate so no more hole. The carpet hole left is maybe 4 inches square from memory. I mounted my ham radio where the hole is and it looks factory.

i found a picture from my build thread. you can see the hole in the carpet and the black metal plate underneath. i also had a big hole where the foot rest was taken out for the clutch pedal. new carpet fixed them both. you could mount something over top to cover it up

@franklin40 what seats are those? They look perfect for your truck.

bmw m3 seats. they have a bit of a high bolster on the sides but with my sliders as a step they're easy to get over. they are super comfy though.

So the trail tailor carpet is a good fit? I haven't been in the market for carpet in a while but I recall when I was working on my 60 series there were not a lot of solid options. How does it match up with OEM? And to clarify, I was aware I would not have a hole in the floor - just the issue with carpet. Was just curious to see how everyone else addressed the issue.

fj62 gets a lift

this is my build thread. page 15 and 16 show the carpet fitment. there is extra material so you get to trim the edges to make it fit right. the trunk area i found there is a small gap around the floor but the rest fits perfectly if you take your time installing it.

I know this isn't for some, but I cut out a section of carpet under the rear seats, (original carpet) and stitched it into the auto hole. I'm no professional, it was just a thick needle and some heavy thread, but it worked pretty well. Don't be a dumbass like me and make sure you match up the loop pattern, but the pic is with a flash, and under normal lighting, you really can't tell there's a odd piece of carpet there.

Lots of great info here. Where is everyone finding their parts (tranny and xfer case)?
When moving my '89 FJ62 3FE over to my '86 FJ60 (work still in progress) I went with an H55f purchased new from Cdan several years ago. At that time the cost of a new H55f with MUD discount was slightly less than $2,000, but I believe the cost has gone up some since then. I plan on using the transfer case from the FJ62 as it has bearing supported output gears. I went ahead and forked over some more $$$ to buy new parts to convert it over to manual front drive engagement. Shifters and shift linkage parts were primarily bought used from mel lowe, although a few new Toyota bushings were used.

Very cool. I was unaware that the FJ62 transfer case could be used with the H55F. I'll do some more research and quit hijacking this thread. Thanks!

I also cut some carpet out of a non-visible place (under the heating plumbing if I remember right), then bought a floor mat kit at the local parts house that had a small mat that fit between the shifters and under the console.
