Hi folks,

I have a 1984 2wd SR5 truck that has the optional 22RE (fuel injected) engine - I have noticed when I'm at some websites or even some parts stores, a lot of the EFI parts listed start at '85 and go on up and list mine only as a carburetor model. I have received several wrong parts over time due to this and was wondering if it would be easier if I just say it's an '85 truck. Are they the same 22RE engine?

The sticker under my hood says:

Engine family: ETY2.4T5FBB4
EVAP Family: EV-E
Engine Displacement: 144.4 CID
E.E.C.S. : EFI/EGR/O2S/TWO

22R-EC 2366cc

Thanks -

They are probably the same but you can always go to this website (from the FAQ above, by the way) and look up your own part numbers if you want to be certain. FWIW, the 22RE shows up as an option for a 1984 2WD Hilux.

Thanks! I have that site bookmarked with my VIN and have used it a few times in the past for diagrams. Do I just type in a similar 85 truck with a 22re and see if the numbers match up on most the engine parts? I tried to check out their forum but it seems to be under construction.

Yes..

On the drivers side b-pillar there is a tag with the build date. What month/year does it say?

I just noticed you are the same person at DOA I emailed last week about what timing chain set my 84 might need - Small world. Thanks again for that and I will hopefully be placing an order this summer sometime.

I'm not affiliated with DOA. Just a happy customer, x3.

just order parts as if you had a 85 22RE

the valve cover is different. some of the vsv's and the ECU pins are different. but that wont matter when gettin parts

always use NGK spark plugs part number 1233

I didnt know that the 84 trucks had an efi option, I do know that the older celicas from 83 to 84 had efi and were labeled as a 22re but were totaly different as far as electrics go, for example they didnt have a knock sensor. maybee thats the same setup in your truck, if it were, all you have to do is order parts for the celica 22re and it would work.

Thanks - I'll look into some of the Celica diagrams too and see how they compare.

It's nothing major but I really have to be careful when buying parts. I had to email DOA because their website lists my truck (84 and earlier) as a double row timing chain and it's definitely a single row... Just stuff like that - Makes me nervous buying parts :wrench:

its a new one on me to hear of a 22re in any truck before 85.

was it a canadian model??

I didn't know they were available either. If you look at that link that I posted in the 2nd post, you will find that an 84 pickup, US market, 2WD had the 22RE available as an option. The 84 4Runner did not. I haven't looked at the 84 4WD pickup to see if it was an option or not.

Here are a few pictures of the engine and ID tags to show that it really is an '84.

That is very interesting. I ran your vin through the EPC and I'll be dang if it doesn't come up with a 22RE.

What's even more interesting is it has a vacuum advance on the distributor.

But yes I have heard before that some '84 2WD trucks were available with EFI.

I assume that truck doesn't have an LSPV, there's a proportioning valve under the master cylinder.

This is fun, kinda like a treasure hunt...

I've been digging around on various Toyota forums and found this after KLF mentioned the VA:

"The early EFI wasn't mechanical though, it was analog. It's easy to spot the differences; vacuum advance-style distributor, large square-shaped TPS, no knock sensor, and the valve cover is the rounded type, not the flat top style of the '85+."

So if I'm thinking correctly mine is sort of an oddball EFI engine that was only produced for about a year before Toyota standardized an injection system in '85... Does that sound right? I guess I need to find a Celica forum and do a bit more looking around, as Cavemancaleb suggested somewhere up above.

The PO of my '84 Xcab 4wd was the OP's son. He told me that when his dad bought the truck new in WA state (49 state truck) that he could have had either a carb as Std. or EFI as an option (though not on the same truck!). His dad was leery of first year EFI and went with a carb'd truck. Sometimes I regret his decision and sometimes I'm glad of it.
