Hi All - I'm looking to purchase my first truck. I came across a beautiful 89 FJ62 here in California. $46,000 seems a bit pricey but may make sense given engine and transmission had a FULL rebuild and it has a spotless interior. I would be curious to hear if the community thought this was a fair price. 212,000 miles. The description is listed below:

This Land Cruiser is in excellent condition, with no rust, a rare find for a vehicle of this vintage. 2 owners. Meticulously cared for.

Key Features:

Upgraded Dobinson Suspension for improved off-road capability and ride comfort

Brand new exhaust system

Engine and transmission both recently rebuilt, with less than 1,000 miles on them

Interior is clean and original, with no rips or tears on the seats

Headliner in great shape

Tires have plenty of tread left and are in very good condition

Comes with comprehensive service records

Always well maintained and garage kept

This FJ62 is turn-key ready and ideal for collectors, adventurers, or anyone looking to own a piece of Toyotas legendary Land Cruiser history. Don't miss your chance to own a clean, mechanically refreshed classic.

Gonna need pics
undercarriage and engine clean!

I’d say this rig falls more in the $25-$35k range personally.

ummm
A brand new 2025 Toyota LC250 Landcruiser can be purchased for $58k - and its definitely an upgrade from a 35 year old FJ62 in my opinion.

That FJ62 you're interested in looks nice... but for $48k? No way
Thank you for this...that new LC is nice but I definitely prefer the classic look. I may try and negotiate down from $46k to $42k to make it more palatable

I looked at a similar FJ62 in Santa Barbara, at the time it was $50k+. I walked away and got the one I wanted for much less. If you want a classic, make sure you drive several of them, inspect/compare, get well versed on what you want.

Thank you . I will give a few a test drive and how they feel. I have a test drive with another this week at $18k but with rust and work needed to be done

It's okay to look at the rusty ones too, you learn what to look for and all the areas for rust to develop. One important area to check is underneath the truck at the rear C Channels or end of the frame. There are several pieces of plate metal stacked together and that where the rust eats away at the frame. I drove over a dozen rigs before I found mine. Really drive them, stop and go traffic, pull off the road engage the 4X, etc. Listen, listen, listen to the truck. You find a lot of quirky stuff that way.
Good Luck!

If it’s what you want and you don’t care about dropping that kind of money then do it. Looks very clean.

However, 99.7% of people on this forum will tell you that for that price it should have an LS engine with all work documented by a reputable shop.

Documentation of engine rebuild along with transmission rebuild would be needed in my opinion it sounds like you had already made up your mind before making this post don't really see the need to ask the community about it.

Thank you - I value your opinion. Do you think it selling in California makes it a premium?
No. If a California resident from day 1 then it's less likely to be rusty, although California 60 series sometimes develop roof rot for some reason.
The photos are poor quality and are missing interior and engine compartment shots but it does look like a good one. IMO, the price is too high, in any case.
I second the comments above to drive and inspect the particular 62's you're interested in. With this one you would definitely want to check documentation of the rebuilds.

46K for a 212000 miles Cruiser is crazy.
Maybe, if the Cruiser has very low miles and all original.

Here is a link for more pictures etc - https://classics.autotrader.com/classic-cars/1989/toyota/land_cruiser/102276962#. I'm starting to shy away from it now with all this feedback
Have you driven a 62 yet? The reason that I ask is that they are slow, slow, slow. The 3FE is a great engine, and it ought to last a very long time, if it was rebuilt correctly, but the horsepower generated by that motor isn't much (155hp, if I recall correctly), and it's a heavy truck. The A440F transmission is great for what it is, but a rebuilt one - unless you can track down full details of the shop that did the work - I would be tentative about.

I'm not knocking 62s. I have one, and I love it, but in Cali traffic (especially freeway entrances) you'll be s***ting yourself until it get up to cruising speed... by the next exit... lol.
