For those of you who have mounted this in the back cargo area and using it to run your ARB's how is the noise level. I'm seriously looking at this to run ARB's, Tools and Air up tires but wonder how anoying it would be to have kick on while wheeling.

You can cycle 1 ARB 10 times on a .5 cu/ft tank before it needs to refill. Not sure the conversion on the 1 1/2 gal tank on a PUMA is but let just say you can cycle it a lot before it will turn on.

Good choice. Great compressor and I am glad they are getting recognition they deserve. So much better than the smaller units that have been popular for a few years. I got an unused extreme aire off ebay at puma/pacbrake prices and love the thing.
 
Fusing the Puma

I see some people are using 60 amp fuses for their 12 volt Pumas. Automotive fuse amperage ratings are based on 32 volts, so a 60 amp fuse should blow at 1,920 watts (i.e. 160 amps at 12 volts). A rule of thumb I found for electrical motors (which can have high starting loads) is they should be fused at 250% of their full load amperage (or 175% with a time delay fuse).

The 3/4 hp motor on the 12 volt Puma draws about 560 watts at full rated load. So 2.5 x 560 watts = 1400 watts/32volts = 43.75 amps. For my Puma I installed a 40 amp fuse.
 
Still ruminating on how/where to mount the puma in my fj60. I used it on a snow run a few weeks ago...aired up my 35's from 15 - 32 psi in very short order. Waaaaaaaaaaaay better (and quieter) than my MV50.

The most straighforward approach is simply to find a spot and bolt the entire enormous thing down, wire it up, and off to the races.

Another option is divorcing the motor from the tank, and mounting each in it's own spot. I think I understand how to do this.

The option I don't understand, and would like advice on please, is can you run just the motor w/out the tank? Assuming this can be done, what needs to be done to make it work?

It can and has been done, is a good option if you never intend to run air tools, blow gun, etc. A couple of considerations: Will need a switch/relay rated with enough amps to run it. All fittings need to be free flowing and/or blow off protection included in the plumbing.

I plan to do something similar. That piece of foam is a joke. It'd be nice if we could buy the endplate of the extremeaire with collar already attached.

I separated my pump and wired it for a remote SB175 connector. Pics when I'm finished.

I could see fabricating two oval plate with a threaded pipe/fitting on one to screw in place of the factory filter and sandwiching the filter in between without modifying the compressor...

BTW I haven't purchased the compressor yet, so I'm not sure how the existing filter if mounted
 
It would work, but don't see the point?:meh: Mine has a bunch of hours, most in the desert, so dusty, the stock filter works fine. Have only cleaned it a couple of times, likely didn't need it, wasn't clogged and was clean on the far side of it.

It has a filter:confused:and needs to be cleaned:eek:

So far 5 year and ~100 running hours Im still learning about my PUMA

I recently purchase a spare when I hear a rummor they may be changing the design. I dont see anything with better performance or price coming close to the original PUMA down the road.

actually after I got mine saw the 2 tanks ( 2Gal ) model .. and damn .. wonder if just have that one :D

For tires the single tank would be faster but if you use a lot of air tools I could see the benfit to the 2 tank model.

I don't have / use air tools ( but 40" on Tencha ) .. but barely holds myself in front of any upgrade for any " tool " that I own .. :frown:

I separated my tank and found that the elbow coming out of the head is some kinda tapered pipe thread. It didn't match any of my metric or standard thread gauges, so it must be some pipe thread. The closest I could find at HomeDepot was 3/8" IP (iron pipe). Does anyone know what size the threaded hole in the pump head is?

As a side note, the other end of the elbow is a funky non-standard flare thread.

I was unable to find a male elbow that went from the pump head 3/8" IP? to 1/4 npt. Looking for brass if possible.

Any help would be appreciated.

P.S.: have checked with Fastenal, a large plumbing supply chain, MSC, and McMaster (online only so far), and haven't come up with a match. I did find some brass bits at home that was "in the ball park" and taped the threads, gently tightened until no leakage, and put on a quick disconnect. Since the head's aluminum, I'd rather get the proper size if I can find out what it is.

I can take a pict, and post if you want.

It may be British Pipe Thread. I know at the 1/8" size it is equivalent to JIS pipe thread and metric pipe thread. Note it comes in two styles, flat and tapered.

Can you get us a close up photo of it with something for scale like a ruler?
 
I'm going to look at bringing these in. If they are selling for 250 online they have to be getting them for around 100. I'm in contact with the company so shall see. The main company is out of Taiwan but they manufacture all over the world, even in the US. Maybe I could do a group buy on these.

If you can find them for $100, put me in for 100 units...Buzzard Gulch need some competition.
