I pulled the cylinder head to day to do a head rebuild due to oil usage and other "PM" type issues. i also developed a leak on the EGR tube so it was easier to address that with the head out. From what i know it was original HG. I am the third owner, probably reasonably well taken care of before me. But i doubt it was "babied" or maintained like a "IH8MUD truck".
The motor looks really messy because i have not cleaned the old head gasket off or anything. The "rust" on the block in the picture is just stain form being out in Moab. It is actually pretty clean. But i would really like to hear what you guys think the light white flaky material on the pistons is. It is actually very light and just a little of it.
You think this might leak a little?

I have some oil smeared in the cylinders to prevent rust. That makes is a little hard to see. But cylinders are full of factor crosshatch hone marks at 222,000 miles! The bore looks great! No indication i am seeing of bad HG. There is some white flaky stuff on the pistons and exhaust valves. I have read this is oil being burned which would make sense from the leaky valve stem seals. What do you think? I am impressed with how good the cylinders looked for 22 years old.
