Power steering was working fine the other day. Then I noticed a puddle of ps fluid underneath, while on the way home ps went out. When I got it home I opened the cap to the reservoir to see if the fluid was moving, but to my surprise the fluid was bubbling out like it was boiling.Any suggestions wether it is the pump or gear.Any help appreciated. Thanks Kris.

may need a cooler in the line was the puddle inder the ps box or under the pump?

Is it from the power steering or transmission? They use the same fluid. The turbulent flow in the reservoir is normal assuming you're talking about a fzj80.

It is coming from the power steering, turbulant I know but it is completely blowing it out. Is there a way that the pump went bad and somehow the pressure is coming back through the reservoir.

had this problem.
front bearing had collapsed on the pump, causing the seal to let fluid out, and pump air into the system, causing fluid to bubble out.

Pull the belt and check the pump for play/nloise

It would be handy to what it is, model and year? If it's a FZJ80 there is no belt. First I would find and repair any leaks, then flush the fluid, if the fluid is contaminated it can easily boil.

94 80 series.I already have the low and high pressure hoses. I will try what you suggested tonight. If that doesn't work I will move on to replacing the pump as a process of elimination.

Replaced the hoses no dice, still bubling in the reservoir. I guess it is time for step 2 power steering pump.

Hold on...

My experience shows that when you pop the PS cap with the truck on you'll get exactly what you stated, especially once air is introduced into the system with a leak. There's quite a bit of pressure in the return line. Now that you replaced the hoses do you still have a puddle of PS fluid after it sits? The only place you could be losing fluid from the PS pump is on the main seal to the engine block, and I find that hard to believe as it's protected by a metal lip on all sides. If you no longer have a puddle, yet still don't have power steering, you more than likely only need to buy a rebuild kit for $10 IIRC and replace the inner seals. If you still have a puddle, try and track down the leak, maybe on the cooler as Rick suggested.
