Alrighty took off the air cleaner no difference. Under fathers advice from what was said to cause a whistling noise somewhere on this forum, I took the hose off the pcv valve and still no dice.

Thanks for all the replies yall I definitely do not want to pull the motor again, but I'm done with diagnosing for the night and prolly till thursday.

I bought a rebuilt alternator awhile back and the guy at the store removed the pulley that was on it and put my old , correct one. Problem was, he didn't tighten down the nut enough so the pulley was wobbling on the shaft and it sounded just like your noise. just a thought.

Well the thing is, is the alternator sounded fine on the old engine. Can it go bad sitting a month not doing anything?

Have you tried removing all the spark plugs, have someone lay under the engine and listen to see if they can tell where the noise is coming from, while you turn the engine over by hand.

When you crank by hand it doesn't sound abnormal at all when we did the pressure testing it didn't sound bad either. I've used a stethoscope on pretty much everything I could think of but it still sounds bad. It didn't originally sound this bad either only when we changed the gasket again it came up but it wasn't bad. It just got worse and worse. It also idle's better than when we had the first gasket in. I think it slowly developed from something I don't believe it could be the manifold because it doesn't die out and it is so loud.

In other words I think it is a coincidence that we first started noticing it after the second gasket.

I do a proper compression check w/the motor warmed up & the throttle open. You metioned the seller may have exagerated the numbers. Have you tried to spay carb cleaner to see if you can find a vacum leak?

That sounds like a metal rotational noise to me.--something is screaming for oil

It's got a small intake leak engine upticked in revs, but the sound was the same. Dry compression was 100-110 on the cylinders.

I didn't see before---what gasket was it that you changed before starting to hear this?

I am of the negative sort, so don't take this the wrong way... It sounds really bad. I wouldn't run it for very long each time you are trying to diagnose it. Since you are probably thinking the worst-engine, make sure to check all the little things first. Sometimes panic and fear of catastrophe can cause us to create one.

1) My first suggestion is to take the belts off and turn it on and see if you still have the sound. You might get lucky and have it be an accessory. Was there coolant in the engine? Or maybe the AC was empty if you have one.
2) Next suggestion is to cut a length of hose and put one end to your ear and poke around the engine with the other. You would be surprised how well this works. You can also use a long screwdriver for this, but it only works on solid objects-waterpump, head, etc. It doesn't just pick up noise in the air very well.
3) Since you said the sound is coming from the rear of the engine, maybe you could get lucky and it is a seizing distributor bushing. If you can't isolate the sound with the hose, you might try pulling the dizzy and turn it to see if it is rough.
4) Any chance that the flywheel/clutch is somehow installed wrong? Maybe one of these components is what is causing the noise. I could see a too long bolt rubbing or something like that happening back there. Maybe the ring gear rubbing on the engine or bell housing.

Anyways, those were my ideas before I drained the oil and looked for metal shavings. I hope it all turns out well.

Used a metal one that came with the complete gasket set from cool cruisers. it now has a felpro graphite gasket.

Haven't done belts yet, ill check the dizzy with the stethoscope. And the clutch is off only the flywheel is on. I'm gonna send off a vid. I don't want to delve to deep and spend even more money on things like oil and such w/out hearing from the cruiser parts guys.
Gonna call them sometime this week and send em a vid.

Thanks for the help.

Which gasket?

Which gasket?

I don't understand your question. The gasket we have on the manifold now is a graphite felpro one. The one that came with the complete engine gasket set we took off after it started leaking like a sieve and couldn't idle.

I also posted in the "what have you done to your cruiser this week" thread:

could you have a busted water pump ? they grind metal on metal when they go - don't ask me how I know

I do not think that is likely as I have put a stethoscope on the pump and have only heard the sound of rushing water. I'll take it into account come friday though.
