Price for a restoration

Why ship it off? The knowledge, friendships, business relationships, and of course the end result are by far worth more than 20-30k.

Don't know how to weld? Learn.
Don't know how to paint? Learn.
Don't know how to work on mechanical stuff? Learn!

You will enjoy the end result ten fold over having someone else do the work for you, and the benefits are an endless list.

All the best!

Agreed :)

I did al the assembly and disassembly on my rig, everything but body work and paint and the carb rebuild. ( upholstery is being done by Shane )

Next time I will take a stab at the painting :)

Learning how your rig works is pretty invaluable, being able to fix it if it breaks etc. It is a great learning process :)

I heard that Proffit's stage 1 resto started at 15k plus. I assume that would be a refresh of a pretty solid and running truck, and that rust repair and body work would go on top of that.

I have almost 15K into my 69 fj40 and it is in parts all over my shop. I have done everything myself except the engine rebuild and painting. It will be about another 150 hours I figure to put everything together and a $2k for carb, hoses, brake lines etc.... btw, i bought the LC in great shape for $4,000 to boot.

There is a HUGE spectrum to what it costs or better yet what "restoration" means as everyone's definition and expectation is different.

$15K for a Stage 1 Restoration is not even near being correct. $15K for a Stage 1 would most likely involve an engine conversion as well.

Stage 3 Restoration is $15K
Stage 2 Restoration is $10K
Stage 1 Restoration is $5K

These are the base labor rates for "typical" 40's. Typical being the normal amount of rust to be found on any 30+ year old Cruiser that is not rusted out. These prices do not include any parts or modifications.

$30-40K

If you are doing a frame off restoration. I think that the labor is a killer. The parts aren't too bad, but when labor rates are $75/hour+ it adds up quickly. I remember paying well over $28K in labor, and I did a lot of research and work......

Ryan.

i have around 13k into my rig. paid $2400 for the 40. rest is parts. except for some frame repair, and rebuilding my front axle. still need paint, all brake lines, few misc motor parts, connectors for wiring, tail lights, and a bunch of other miscellaneous things.

I had Proffitt's do a ton of work to my FJ40. I did not have them "restore" the vehicle or do any bodywork, but they did all the drivetrain modifications, as well as other stuff.

I was very pleased with the quality of the work they did (I'm verry picky), and I think their prices are quite reasonable. I wouldn't hesitate to bring them another vehicle or recommend them to my best friend.

Jeremiah (Proffitt) has done a lot of Cruiser projects, so he has the knowledge, the skill and the experience. As such it takes him much less time to do something because he's done it so many times.

The only downside is others have figured this out and there's a line of vehicles in front of you.

Amen to that. They've had my rig for almost a year now and it's still waiting for paint. I guess quality = long wait and lots of $.

For those inclined to DIY, I agree it is a fun process. I agonized a lot before sending my unfinished 40 off, but in the end I had a harder time justifying endless hours in the garage at the expense of other things. Time and money are hard to balance for everyone.

Last big build I did before slling Radd Cruisers, was a fj45 with 1hz diesel , aftermarket turbo with powder coated frame and a ton of parts.

With engine and turbo I think the bill came in around 36K., prolly why I am no longer in the biz.i

One of the biggest cruizer Rebstoration companies said they would of quoted more like 50 to 60K.

Good luck...

Rob

Stripped to the nuts and rust

I've got $13 K into the rehabitation of my 77 to date wihich includes $3000 for sand blast, new qtr panels and rockers and eurathane paint. And I'm doing the body and paint and all mechanical accept that Graves, Ontario, CA did the motor rebuild and Jim VanGordon did the carb. The truck was stripped down to the rust and nuts. Headers and auxilary gas tank are from Downey. Power steering, disk brakes all around and on and on and on. Oh yeah, can't forget the 12 hours and 3 miles of electrical tape to rewrap the wire harness, and glad I found the two bare wires before they found me. I shop the internet for deals and get to buy at discount for some stuff through my company.

I started last June and consider myself lucky in that business has been a little bit slow, so I was able to devote about 90 days straight during the summer to get a lot done. It was either that or lay someone off and have to REALLY work. I logged 9 hours to locate another air pump then strip two air pumps to get enough parts to build a new rust free unit with new bearings and paint. Hard to imagine paying someone for that. That would make the pump worth, uh, like about $700?

Rebuilding the top and rail took a couple of days.

I bumped up the insulation with padded interior panels and RV carpet on the ceiling and where possible the sides and doors are injected with urethane for sound and climate control to insure the AC does more than just blow cold air up front and the heater warms more than my feet.

When the truck finally rolls the odometer will be zeroed and the final tab is expected to be $18-$20K. How much to pay someone to do all this? Don't want to even think about it.

TMACK has it right. After totalling all the receipts, you'll end up buying the wife some jewelry. I'll never pull out my calculator again in the shop!
