Recently had my FJ40 stolen and returned. However it came back spraypainted. Been working thru removing spray paint. Here's what worked for me. To get the spraypaint removed.
Brushed on Citristrip and let it sit for maybe 20 mins.
Scraped most of it off with a flat spatula, then wipe with paper towels to get off the bulk. Spatula was just to quickly bulk remove the loose paint without loading up a towel.
Can back with 0000 steel wool and acetone to remove the rest of the stubborn spots.
Clean paper towel and acetone to do a final pass and remove all the little particles left over from the steel wool pass.
It takes a bit of work, but didn't react with the original paint as far as I can tell. Wonder if something harsher would remove it faster. These two doors took about 45 mins start to finish.
If the spray paint was on original paint it pretty much wiped off. The pain that was on "patina" needed the steel wool and acetone to be removed
