Recently had my FJ40 stolen and returned. However it came back spraypainted. Been working thru removing spray paint. Here's what worked for me. To get the spraypaint removed.


Brushed on Citristrip and let it sit for maybe 20 mins. (till most of the paint had reacted and orange peeled)
Scraped most of it off with a flat plastic spatula, then wipe with paper towels to get off the bulk. Spatula was just to quickly bulk remove the loose paint without loading up a towel.
Can back with 0000 steel wool and acetone to remove the rest of the stubborn spots.
Clean paper towel and acetone to do a final pass and remove all the little particles left over from the steel wool pass.

It takes a bit of work, but didn't react with the original paint as far as I can tell. Wonder if something harsher would remove it faster. These two doors took about 45 mins start to finish.

If the spray paint was on original paint it pretty much wiped off. The paint that was on "patina" needed the steel wool and acetone to be fully removed

Cheap spray paint will wipe right off with a rag wet with methyl ethyl ketone peroxide. Read and heed the MSDS for this chemical.

MEKP or MEK? Ive seen MEK around.

I've got some areas on the larger panels where the spray paint splattered and its left thick spots that the cleanstrip just isn't getting thru deep enough. So would like to find something to get those finals spots off easier.

Door looks like this. Can get the tiny stuff off with steel wool and acetone in a quick pass. But the bigger stuff takes a bit of elbow grease to remove.

The peroxide stuff works great. If you are quick it will eat the cheap spray paint and leave older cured paint in place. It is really a nasty chemical, very hard on your liver and I'm sure other parts too. Use outside with gloves at minimum, more protection would be better. Amoron has 8 oz $25, I think we paid that for a gallon!

I used acetone and goof-off on the hood, fenders and aprons to remove the spray paint, then applied Poppy's Patina (Vice Grip Garage) Shine Juice. Apply with a pad, let dry for 30 minutes, wipe and polish. Semi permanent with a matte/satin finish. Lot of metal on he hood, but I like it. The rest of the truck got the wash, CLR, buff and wax. Still need to deal with the inside of the bed.

I’ve scrubbed the ever loving fajeebees out of my OG paint with purple scotchbrite and acetone to get the repaint off. Doesn’t seem to affect the blue unless it had been sanded down during previous prep work.

New project. This truck was sold new in 73 about 25 miles from my shop and lives 3 miles north of me. One owner. The local Chevy shop works on it.

His daughter reached out on Facebook looking for a painter.

Luckily the locals pointed her to me for a Patina preservation.

Stay tuned. This thing should pop.

I was using linseed oil with great results for years after reading through this post. However, last year I figured that I would try Poppys Patina. I knew almost immediately after putting int on that I would regret it. Within a year it was very streaky and looked terrible. I finally removed it all yesterday using acetone and a lot of time.
I picked up some Penetrol and gave that a try this time around. Happy with the results so far.

That’s a bummer. I have a can of penetrol but thought I’d try the poppy’s first. We’ll see what happens after this summer.

Getting back to patina, getting rid of horrible black repaint. It’ll get a coating of something protective before the pieces are actually installed for good.

Standard soap wash, rinse, CLR with soft scrub pad, rinse, dry, fluid film.

Well I fu$&ed up my hood… I used diluted CLR on it with 0000 steel wool and it ate through/melted the red primer and exposed the bare metal. There are now “rivers” of primer/bare metal where it used to be solid primer. And now I see rust spots…

How can I address this? I don’t want a glossy clearcoat, but I sure as hell don’t want rust forming! Is there a subtler matte product I can apply that will protect the bare metal?

IMHO if the paint/primer dissolves that easily it wasn't going to last long any way.

Not a purest by any means. Scuff the hood paint with a scotch brite pad, blow it off, spray the whole thing with good primer, twice.
Looks Capri Blue to me. I had my hard toped 72 painted in flat tan - took 3 gallons to do 7 coats outside 5 on the inside - lasted for many years
