That’s why there’s missing paint 😂.

Awesome patina!

Planning to begin the patina-preservation process on my freshly swapped 40.
Is there a consensus on the optimal system for preservation?
My plan is this:
- CLR scrub : Do people recommend a sponge, rag, or something with some texture like scotch-brite?
- Wash and dry.
- Apply Penetrol with a brush and let dry.

Do people recommend Fluid Film or BLO over the Penetrol? Any thoughts would be welcomed.

Is the hood rusty? If so Penetrol. The rest of the body I would cut, polish, and wax. That paint will pop back to life. If the hood is not really rusty I would sand it with 1000-2000 grit paper and cut, polish, and wax it as well.

Rad 40!

The first 1-2 pages of this thread really break it down. @wngrog has helped perfect this process and it's laid out in detail.

There is detail there regarding the rag/scotch brite choice and it's based on your paint/patina stage and desired outcome.

Dont forget the rust stopper!

Good luck!

I don't do Penetrol at all. I've never liked it.

Based on the amount of paint you have with not much hard exposed rust I would

CLR with blue scotchbrite

Water rinse

Polish and wax with a orbital where able

Add fluid film lightly to the hood whenever you wash

Appreciate the detail and recommendations.
I will post some before & after photos when I finish!
I bet it will pass more gas stations as well.
With 16 gallons in the factory tank and 24 gallons in the auxiliary fuel tank and averaging 24-25mpg highway I can make it about 950-1150 miles per fuel stop.

I need some advice from the collective.
Working through the patina project on the 45, I had good success with the "process" until I got to the point where I needed to remove some pretty bad spray paint from both fenders, one apron and the hood.
Passenger fender and apron had a reasonable amount of factory paint, with good patina.

Driver's fender had considerably less factory paint and more patina.

The hood had very little factory paint left when I was done with the Goof Off.

I need your thoughts on a finish for the hood. From reading this awesome thread, I am leaning toward using Penetrol as it would be a more permanent solution than FF, and attract less dust, but @wngrog is not a fan. I would welcome any input/ advice.

Has anybody around here tried Vicegrip's "Shine Juice"?

@KeepCruzin what engine is that?
Stock non-usa 2F from the looks of it. They used that style air cleaner since they didn't have the same emissions we have in the US so there is WAY less on top of the engine.

You are looking at the wrong engine. I referenced a different engine that @KeepCruzin posted. It looks like a diesel but I 100% don’t know my diesels.
My bad. That one is a 12HT. It confirms in his footer. Nice engine in a 40!

I don't think that's the non-US air cleaner. I'm not sure of that particular one, but the non-US one has some different angles.

The middle eastern spec air cleaner under the hood of my 40.

A local guy used Poppy's Patina on his truck. It's a bit more permanent than even Penetrol. I think I'd use that

I looked at both of these, and while I like the durability of the clear coat as permanent solution, I am undecided about the matte vs the gloss finish, and to achieve a satin finish you buy a quart each of gloss and matte and mix 50/50, yielding about 4x the product I need at twice the cost of either by themselves.

The other issue is that I am not sure that the hood and fenders don't have too much patina for me, and my partner and the chief financial advisor is not 100% sold on the look either. The rest of the truck is good, though. Knowing what I do now, I would have worked the crappy paint and called it part of the story of the truck instead of stripping it all off. Too late for that.

So, I ordered a quart of the "Shine Juice" to test the Poppy's Patina look with everything installed on the truck. It is a satin oil finish that dries and is durable for several months, and can be removed with a soapy water scrub. This will buy me some time to make up my mind. I sure hope we like it, as there doesn't seem to be any good options if not.

Pictures to follow.
