Folks! Now that all my gaskets have arrived, I'm about to dig in to some gasket replacement projects with the aim to stop - or at least slow down - some of the oil leakage I'm seeing on my FJ62. First stop will be the oil pan gasket, probably followed by the side cover and valve cover (after adjusting my valves).

Questions for you all:

1) Do you recommend using an RTV-type gasket sealant in addition to the new gasket in each of the above cases? I've heard sealant recommended for the oil pan and side cover, but also read that it can/should be omitted for the valve cover. Thoughts?

2) What about brands of sealant? I went to a local auto store, got totally lost in all the brands and flavors available. What do you use? The more specific the better.

I'm still a noob to all this and appreciate the input.

Seems that every Toyota mechanic I know, whether a buddy or pro, all use and swear by Toyota FIPG (Form In Place Gasket). Pretty sure most of my engine, transmission and transfer case are sealed with FIPG. I know a Toyota master mechanic and he's stated that things like cork gaskets would be obsolete, if Toyota had FIPG in the 80's (not sure if they did or didn't) there would be less cork. The FSM calls for FIPG on newer diesels to seal them up. I have no imperical data to back this up, just an opinion and observation

I like the Toyota Black.

I use Permetex grey on all the paper gaskets(thin coat), and nothing on the cork, except where the flats meet the main bearing caps.

Having used most everything on the market at one time or another all that I keep around is Ultra Copper (for exhaust stuff only), The Right Stuff for things that don't need to come apart easily (but no fuel exposure), and Hylomar for things that do want to come apart easily (& those exposed to fuel).

The right stuff works great...
X2 on the Right Stuff. I have never had a leak using it. But, I believe the prep/cleaning make more difference than the gasket sealant.

Ah! I wasn't sure how to read "the right stuff", I figured jcj_ was being a smart a$$!

Thanks for everyone's input. It sounds like it's more about preference than one specific brand/flavor.

The Hylomar is a little expensive, and you'll have to get it on-line, prolly, but it's the best I've used.

For Right Stuff - do you guys use the grey or black version? Also I read that it cures really fast, like 5 mins. Has that been a problem in getting, say, an oil pan on?

I use the black because I have never seen the grey. The label says to assemble within 5 minutes, but as you point out, that would be a problem on an oil pan. I have done 2 oil pans and it was way over 5 minutes from the time I started until I got everything tight, and yet I have had no problems with either one leaking. I think the "5 minutes" is a CYA from our friends the lawyers. My experience has been that it is easy to work with and effective if you don't do anything too stupid. So really, it is a matter of personal preference-pick one and see how it goes- all of these choices are good ones.

.

No biggie. I hear that all the time from the :princess:

The cure time is kind of quick but the "cheese in a can" type applicator works well if you have to apply it quickly.

Although I have never tried, it says it can be used immediately after assembly. Makes a good item to keep with your trail gear.

Quite agree with DickM it sometimes takes more than 5 mins.
Previously i did a 1Hz sump in RTV all ready to go to push into place and then there was surprising back locating stud bolt and the Bellhousing lip at the back.
I struggled for ages but could not get the sump into place the stuff went off and what a mess i was left with. It was a hot day.
Recently i was told by a knowledgeable Super Cheap manager that the Right Stuff was the go & that All OEM Toyota uses Permatex Ultra Black but they only had small tubes so zapped around the corner to Repco.
Manager there recon`s Ultra Grey in Permatex and he`s been there 25yrs so 13oz tube of grey i got. Make shore you pick up the right tube also the matching colors of silicone are on the same shelf.
Now i just located You Tube channel Permatex Ultra Black vs JB Black Weld... i`m taking the Permatex Ultra Grey back to the shop and swap for THE Permatex ULTRA BLACK STUFF .
Check this out : Permatex Utra Black Demo
