Brushes in the alternator. @bloc has a fantastic thread on here with lots of photos, very easy.

Here: Alternator brushes as PM - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/alternator-brushes-as-pm.1337740/

Plan to pull the radiator, even if you are not replacing it. Tip: once you get the shroud loose, make yourself a piece of cardboard to slip down between the fan and radiator. Once you unbolt the fan, it has to come out with the shroud and it will pinball all around in there, which will bend many fragile fins in the radiator. Trust me on this one, it sucks to straighten those fins.

Replaced my power steering at with OEM at 280K.

I will be doing HG every 4 weeks, or every 2 gas fillups whichever is shorter.

Interesting

Never seen that and don’t even know what it does, but it has a bearing, so I’ll add it to the list

THANKS
Around 150k I was chasing what sounded like a belt chirp. New belt, tensioner, idler, chirp still present. Turned out to be the fan support bearing.

Yes definitely while you’re in there at your mileage.

Thanks man.

I embarrassingly haven’t looked into the details of this motor as much as I should have and I didn’t even know this thing existed until @TomEf posted here.

Thanks guys!!

May I ask you. I guess there are pretty sure similarities with withe D-4D engine but what made you to change the power steering pump?
I had within the last months sometimes feeling that the steering was every now and then a bit.. different is the right word.
Changed already the fluid and cleaned, container and will do now maybe between the holidays a second change to get the debris of the years out of it but I was already wrapping my mind that there could be maybe also something other than just the fluid causing this.

You should also make sure to stop at the dealership and get a fresh pack of curse words, you will need them when you go to remove the pump and the alternator. Get the OEM ones, the ones at AutoZone don't work as well. Take off the P/S front wheel, you can reach most of it this way. There's a plastic inner fender to remove, hope you don't break the snap fasteners.

Gear wrenches are your friend!

Well, truck is now at 217k

I was looking for a very specific color combo spec and knew it’s going to be a long term vehicle for me.

I bought it with every intention of a full resto-rebuild

I got a PILE of dealer service records, but other than a million oil changes and the radiator and serp belt being replaced, I’m pretty sure it’s all original

Sooooo… I’m going through each and every wear item and replacing it with new OEM

Pump starting making a little squeal and since it’s original, gives me great excuse to rip the front of the motor apart and refresh all of it at once to calm my OCD and give me piece of mind.

That is a great write up and book marked. Thank you sir

I’m import my curse words directly from Japan sir

Noted on the tips. Thank you

What’s the general consensus on AC Compressor clutch longevity?

Seems that’s original also and wouldn’t be much work to replace “while I’m in there”

Only $150 or so

Thoughts?

I recall one, maybe two reports of issues with them, in almost seven years reading this section.

But yeah, you're already in there.. I just can't remember whether they require special tools or not, which could add to the cost.

I replaced the radiator and all the stuff on the front of the engine except the alternator, just 19k miles ago.

Now I’m having random, infrequent voltage surges that burn my headlights out.

New alt on the way.

Don’t be like me. Replace the alternator if you’re tearing into the front of the engine anyway.

Thanks.

I got the special tools for it. Gonna add to

Agreed. Was hemming and hawing over it since was $400+ but OCD kicked in and ordered one.

Gonna be brandy new truck soon 😂
