Please post up a picture of your favorite power steering cooler type and location. I have a saginaw box in the front of the frame and I'm running an fj60 pump.

I'm kind of partial to this one:

I'm going to go home now and see if I can find a great place tp put it that I won't regret in the future. I hate to have it under the hood, but I don't want to look at it either.

I searched and didn't find what I was looking for... :frown:

I thought of something like this, but I don't think it will cool as well, and they're about twice the cost.

I use a large auto transmission cooler; actually, I think I have two installed. It is just a simple, generic unit from Napa, iirc, the kind you would secure to the radiator.

Instead of securing it to the radiator, I have it mounted to the screen in front of the radiator instead of the radiator itself.

I have a plate cooler from Baker Precision (4" x 6" x 3/4" w/ 3/8" Barb) that works great with my J20 Sag box. It fits nicely in front of the lower driver side corner of the radiator and bolts to the screen.

I conducted an unofficial cooler test some time back on an auto trans, (same idea as ps cooler). I found that the cool looking aluminum cylinder with fins was a waste of money. It would have to be huge to do the job. This is a hot rod accessory. The tube type worked ok but the plate and fin was the hands down winner. Both types are dependent on the surface area of the cooler. Air flow is also important. Most cars operate with no cooler, so something is better than nothing. However, for slow hard, rock crawling type driving , bigger is better. Anything to get heat out of the engine compartment is good.
The black cooler that you have pictured would work great.

I use a Setrab ProLine Oil Cooler mounted above the winch. The location maximizes the cooling and I've had no issues in over 10 years since installed. Yes, I’ve used the winch since installing the cooler without issue, but I haven’t had to rescue a Jeep in some time. I also have a synthetic winch line.

I used a 4' piece of mild steel brake line, bent into a loop about 1' long by 4" wide. This piece is attached to the driver's side inner fender just behind the radiator. I sawed off the brake line ferrules, and left the flares on the line itself to better grip the 1/4" fuel line used as a return line. I'm running 33x9.5s with minitruck PS, so I don't need much cooling.

Be careful on using Transmission coolers some restrict the flow of fluid going back to PS pump. Try using the same diameter all they way through.

Got what they had at the Kragen's. $30ish. This is the 401 model. Sawtooth has a 402 model which I would've got if they had it, but I waned it done. I'm pretty happy that it clears the front screen and the radiator so I can pull the bib or the radiator without dicking around with the PS cooler.

I didn't even have to cut the existing return line and I had another short piece of the plastic tubing wrap that was just the right length. It came out great for a short little project.

I sprayed a squirt of black at the shiny tube at the top so it was less noticible. The black spot on the screen is hardly noticeable other than with the flash.

I used a Derale Power Steering Cooler - D12200. I purchased one through Etrailer.com for $26.95. So far, the temps seem great. Waiting for summer and warmer temps. I also attached the cooler to the screen in front of the radiator instead of the radiator itself.

Specs:
  • Inlets: 11/32" hose barb
  • Overall dimensions: 12-1/4" wide x 2-1/2" tall x 3/4" deep
  • Core length: 8-3/4"
  • Distance between inlets: 1-1/4"
  • 1-Year warranty

Nice work Eddy.No need for anything more than what you just installed, plus it is tucked away nicely out of harms way.
