Builds Poverty packin’: 1992 HZJ80 in Texas

@joekatana did a TON of work to it. I’d love to see as many pics of it before, during and after.
I’m just doing maintenance and a few touch ups.

Last update for today: though this wasn’t strictly necessary, black manual mirrors are still available. I splurged and bought them just because they actually still exist. At some point, probably sooner than we want, Toyota will stop producing these parts.

Such a sweet rig and you’ve done a great job! One of the few threads I’ve subscribed too.

Onur throw in a good word for me to get on the short list if it’s ever for sale again!

Nice. I also have a poverty pack. It utilitarian and reminds me of my 60, but rides way better. One thing I need on mine is certainly a tach.

@shellb never say never, but I don’t ever want to sell this one. I did just sell my ‘forever truck’ FJ62 to fund a 79 pickup build though...

@chelo This is definitely the most comfortable cruiser I own. As much as I love my 60 series trucks, the coils ride so much nicer. I definitely don’t drive hard enough to need a tach. I just drive it by ear. And water temperature gauge...since that’s the only other gauge in the console.

Got to see @Onur this week. He was passing through town and we were able to get myself, @Mr Cimarron and @teleskier together at my barn. @Onur looked over my rig, did some light wrenching, then had dinner before he was off again.

Always glad to see you, and looking forward to the next one already.

Plus, @Onur confirmed that all h150 transmissions are identical. Only the bellhousings differ - so any active part number will get me a new h150 transmission to drop into my 80. The old one needs a total rebuild...

Luckily you even know someone who can give you the PN.

Yesterday I was able to get the last door panel on. I have new regulators and door runs on the way, but the new panels made such a noise reduction that I just HAD to put the panel on. I changed out the brown hardware for gray, but didn’t put in the vapor barrier. I’ll go back and do that when the regulator gets here.

I also stuck some used OEM barn door interior panels from @joekatana on the back doors. All in all, the noise reduction is significant, even without Dynamat or any other soundproofing. I’ll probably see if I can find another eBay provider of the reproduction door cards for the rear, or just get some Masonite and cut them out myself.

It’s not ‘modern new vehicle’ quiet in here but I can talk on speakerphone without shouting.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays.

I thought the old girl looked good in the fading light of the holiday afternoon.

Yesterday @Spallet and @shanko were over at the barn, working on getting @shanko ’s new 12HT back into his converted 62. @Spallet brought over his Hotsy heated pressure washer and we degreased a lot of stuff including my 1HDFT and the 80.

I haven’t hand washed a car since senior prom, 1995. But the 80 cleaned up quite nicely.

Looking forward to Sean welding in his new motor mounts and getting his 12HT powered 62 back on the road soon.

I search eBay all the damn time for diesel parts. To my great surprise, the other week there was a blue/gray HZJ 80 bench seat and the front right 60% portion of a 60/40 bench split. The correct color. The correct cloth pattern. Even better, they were in Odessa, Texas.

Shipping was amazingly fast and they arrived a few days ago.

Here’s the old squeaky, creaky, vinyl 80 bench next to the new cloth seat from eBay.

I had to swap out the seatbelt receivers, as the new seat only had lap belts in the back. When I pulled the Velcro back on the seat bottoms, I found a bunch of interesting stuff in both seats...

Confetti in my Belgian seat, a Nicaraguan Córdoba, kids’ toys...and someone’s high school crush? The picture was inside a carefully folded piece of paper, maybe a love note from 20 years ago? It was stained and unreadable, so we will never know.
