Going from an 80 to a 70 is like going from a modern digital SLR camera to a 1960's Argus 35mm camera. Anybody can take a perfect picture with a new camera. You have to know exactly what you are doing to get a good picture with the old camera. Even then it may be a bad shot.
Is there anyone on this forum that was born in the 1960’s? 😁

I have an 80 now but considering a 70 in my future. What are your thoughts on a 70 when comming from a 80?

I had an early fj80 and it feels very similar to this kzj78. the 1kzte in the kzj78 has much more pep and more fuel efficient. (probably less reliable than the 3fe though) My fj80 had the 3fe and a440 trans while it felt completely bullet proof the kzj78 feels more modern in comparison. The fj80 was not as quick for sure. my fj80 was barley able to keep up with modern traffic when it had 31s or the 33s. However the ride of the kzj78 to me feels more like a Jeep Wrangler than an suv compared to the more suv feeling fj80. the biggest difference I have found is the kzj78 is more squirly on the road than the fj80. I don't think Ill like taking the kzj78 on the hwy either. I think a lot of that us due to the bigger tires on my kzj78. The interior is also much more narrow than the kzj78. My surfboard a five foot 8inch shortboard would fit in side ways in my fj80. Not at all in my kzj78 it barley fits without tutting the rear front seats.

I think it comes down to is they are both very different vehicles. I will admit that I thought they would be more similar before I bought the kzj78.

I will preface this with - I bet a fzj80 feels way more modern. (I have never driven a fzj80 I had an fj80) and I will say I am only familiar with the kzj78 wagon Not a heavy duty 70 series. and I have only had the kzj78 for a few months. These are just my impressions! I am not trying to offend anyone. I would have both if I could! in fact The dream cruiser for me is a fj55 with a 2f and 5 speed swap! Not really sure if they ever came with the 5 speed.

Bought this gem a year ago after selling the HJ61 I restored over a period of 7 years. This 21-year old HZJ78 was in an exceptional mechanical state. After a year of Covid-waiting on lots of parts and a lot of wrenching - with a maiden trip to Sweden after stage 1 of modification - she is almost ready to roam the world. Big kudos to my local overland garage La Grange for all the mechanical work. Last mods I'm planning are interior lighting, seat covers and something to carry firewood.

What rear bumper is that?

The bumpers are fabricated by a company in Poland: fabryka4x4. Very good quality. The spare tire carrier and the jerrycan mount hinge on the bumper and are at the same time both connected to the doors of the car. Open a door and the carrier swings out together with the door. No separate latches, really clever engineering.

So I'm getting ready to spend a few more nights in the budget 79. I did add running water, propane holder, memory foam mattress and a bug screen. feeling pretty good about it, I made it for about (5) days without a shell sleeping on a air mattress so this should be a little better????

Amazing. One of my favorite places in the world.

Mine too. Really nice scenery and cute old little villages with very warm hearted people! We were staying at an Agri-hotel and the owner is also a 4x4 enthusiast so was ok with us filling his parking lot with mud and carrying it inside on our boots 😏 he even let us use his garden hose to dose off the vehicles 🙂

I suspect the food and wine was terrible :crybaby::cheers:
Sicily has so much specialities that you can't go wrong .

Yes, the rally started from there and we were staying in Santa Domenica Vittoria (15min drive away). The meats are divine, especially the local wild boar and the castrated mutton.

Hello everyone, I have been here for a few years. I started out with a 1997 80 series and became hooked on land cruisers. I have been working in Guatemala for years so I decided to buy myself a nice diesel 79 series double cab. I am currently in Nicaragua touring around and will be traveling up to the USA for May - August. I love my truck the 1Hz with a turbo is the Boss, I am running an OME 2” lift, BP-51 shocks and 35” rubber on Black Rhino wheels. I have crossed many rivers and climbed Volcanos with “Pepe my little mule”
