Hi folks, You guys have some nice looking LCs here. I've had my LJ78 for a week now. Its on stock 16x6 inch wheels with stock 215/80R16 tires. oh, they look odd and skinny . Without a lift, has anyone gone to 17x8.5, +18mm offset with 286/65R17 tires? Trying to see the biggest wheel/tire I can fit in without breaking anything in the LC. see pix to see what it looks like now. all original...at least so far. thanks for the help!

Looks good! Without a lift you will want tall skinny tires, like what @JimmyPrado has. I currently have 225/75/16’s and am planning on getting 235/85/16’s when I get it back on the road. Apparently these can fit up to 34” tires if they are on stock rims and are skinny.

Really clean looking truck, congrats!

You probably know, but these are great and tough little trucks with the exception of the stock engine. The first generation cylinder heads on these motors are GUARANTEED to crack within the first 100,000km or so (releasing coolant into the combustion chamber). There is a second generation cylinder head which is much much better. There are also a few modifications to be done to help these run cool and prevent future issues. Any idea if the cylinder head has already been upgraded? If it hasn't, then make sure you are prepared for it and budget for it. If you do the work your self, you can fix it for $2500 or so using OEM parts.

There are some great build threads on this forum too. Have a read through them to get familiar with what people do to these trucks.

Thank you. The truck is all stock, and it is in very good condition. The inside looks like-new. Is there a way to recognize the 1st and 2nd gen heads? I've driven < 300 km since I got it 12 days ago. temp gauge has never gone above the 1/4 mark, and the oil pressure is at around 1/2. I lined the garage floor with plastic. no leaks either. I replaced all the fluids, including the coolant. Thanks again.

Unfortunately there is no easy way to tell the difference between the early and later head design. Some say that the factory long block was painted black during assembly, so the original head gasket would be painted black on the edge that sticks out. If the head has been off, the new head gasket would not be painted on the edge. Pretty hard to tell though.

How many kms on the truck? Glad to hear it's running good. If you do some of the preventative work many of us have done, you will greatly lower the risk of problems. They are great vehicles really; I love mine.

The head looks like it was painted black, but there is very little black left. The gasket is shiny silver, so its not painted. At least the gasket looks as if it was replaced, perhaps it the original head. 200km on the truck. The Japanese owner seems to have done a good job with it. See pix below. Thanks for the help!

I'd say you almost certainly have a new cylinder head on there. Gasket definitely looks new. Also, the original heads don't last 200,000km.

I’ve done 2000km so far. Starts up on first turn, and runs well. Does 600 km per tank (about 18-19 gal). Finally got it registered in denver. Had to get a new VIN assigned and emissions done. It’s slow to take off. Is it okay to rev it up to 3500 rpm? It seems my gear changes are at around 3500. 25kmh on the first, 40kmh on the 2nd and 60kmh on the 3rd at 3500 rpm. 4th abd 5th gears are fine. About 110kmh at 3000 rpm. Wonder if it’s too hard for the 2LTE. After weeks of compound abd polishing, it looks a lot better. See new pix

Looks great! Do you have a manual transmission? In mine I’d generally shift at around 3000, cruising at 110kph with the 29” tires was 3300 rpm. I don’t like revving diesels much, but these do make peak power at something like 3800rpm, so it’s probably fine. One thing that will really make a difference on takeoff is to remove the throttle butterflies and block off or remove the EGR system.

Yes it’s a 5 speed manual. I have 265/65r17 on 17x8 rims with the negative offset. The speedo syncs up perfectly with speed on Waze. Do you have directions or a YouTube on how to remove the butterflies and block or the removal the EGR system. Thanks for the help.

There are several Prado build threads where people have documented a complete EGR delete. I simply disabled my system and removed the butterflies, the photos and description are in the first build thread in my signature.
