OK, thanks. I think I need new glasses.

I'm still looking at options and ways to handle the issue...at this point, it is what it is...

I have full histories of all post edits, so in the short term, I'm monitoring how that effects the database and server loads. Additionally, as I come across edits, I'll check how the history system works and whether the undo ability is sufficient.

Short term: lock it tight...and open as possible over time.

life goes on
what it might teach newbies is to be careful of what and how you post ??
<of course i would be in deep s*** if i couldn't edit my posts.>

One question: Do non-supporting members still have the option to delete their own thread?

Wasn't aware they did, other than perhaps Chat...haven't looked at those settings in 5-6 years tho, so my memory may be a bit fuzzy...

I was thinking they did in Chat, that would still be a good place to have that option.

Just a thought.....

Just implemented...

USED to be unlimited, but there are a couple reasons it's not anymore...

1> Spammers...they register on a forum, post a few times with what seem to be 'realistic' posts, then come back later and edit those posts to spam or virus links...seems to be one of a few new ways the spammers are trying to infiltrate the forums.

Just a thought,
Why not give the right to edit after XXX postings like newbees get the right to add pics after xx (can't remember) postings.

A star is $25, it solves the problem, along with giving you unlimited amount of pictures you can post, larger pm box, less ads without blocking any, etc.

Well worth it for what the site offers. :meh:

The 'noobie' level is 10 posts...too low to create an 'edit' threshold...

the next level is 250 :)

Current level system works quite well, not interested in adding another mid-point.

I'm in the "this is a drag" group. Paying to get a star is the only way to edit? I'll look into the star ratings but what value can they really hold if they're purchased and not earned?

Obviously, for you, nothing.

For others, having a free place to sell their parts, get their tech questions asked and answered, gather advice and learn from a worldwide group of friends is worth $20 of yearly support and thanks.

The forum IS the value. You are currently getting it for free. If you have a conscience, and $20 to spare, you will get a good feeling buying a silver star, along with, unlimited pic attachments, huge PM box, editing capability and probably a few other things I forgot.

If, as an example, you had a starting problem on your 80 series, and took it to a Toyota dealer service department, you might end up paying ~$500 for a new starter installed (non enthusiast friend just did this exact thing). If you were to use the advice and help of this forum, you would spend 1 hour and $20 on a new set of contacts and plunger for the same result. Let's say your time is worth $100 (mine's not, but I'm being generous), you still came out $380 richer. Hmmm... that star sure is cheap!

cheap people never see value, all they can see is what they can get for free.

sad really.

lets see, $20 is: not even a case of beer or a pack of smokes? can't get a BJ for $20. supper out for $20 is pretty cheap meal.

in my eyes, don't pay the $20 and then you have no right to bitch.

what DOES irritate is having to renew every year. i would rather pay $100 and not have to bother sending a cheque for 5 years.

...actually you probably could get a $20 BJ, not sure you would want one though! :)

I get both sides of this argument, $20 isn't too much to ask, and no it doesn't buy much these days. But I too find it inconvenient to not be able to edit posts, as I'm sure many other users do, most users you won't hear from, they just won't take the time to bitch about it.

Websites enjoy success based on how much traffic they attract. The more user friendly features that they have the more users they attract which in turn allows the site to charge more for ads. Trying to place a dollar value on the content of your site (even a low, reasonable dollar amount) and charging users for it will only create a tendency to reduce traffic, because generally speaking, users expect to get content for free, it's the psychology of the internet, it's a "user centric" realm.

Not being able to edit posts does suck and it's too bad that spammers and deadbeats abuse the internet and screw it up for legitimate well meaning users.

For me it's not that big a deal and it won't stop me from using 'Mud (which I'm sure is the case for most), it's a great site, but it would be nice if a technological answer could be found than to simply end post editing. I'm sure there is a more sophisticated solution.

X2 on Rusty's comment.

This how I solve my "little $20" problem. I'll put this P.S. sometimes under my comments and postings when I feel the text is not correct or can be better.

P.S. This posting of mine may have spelling errors in it since English is NOT my first (or second) language. Unfortunately the edit function is gone so you guys have to live with it.
