Mike,

But we got 'er done:) The advantage to doing it when it was 5 degree F was that we could not feel it when we pinched our fingers or dropped things on our hands. The other advantage is that it felt really nice to weld, because we finally got a bit of heat. See? There really was method in my madness.

Besides, I seem to recall putting a transmission into your bloody 4Runner on your frozen driveway with water running down my armpits:bang: It all works out even in the end. Come to think of it, I reckon the next winter we put an engine into that same Runner.......

Cheers,

Josh

I know this is an FJ45 owner's club post, but I figure that since I am an owner and my FJ40 is part of my club, it was on-topic to post a few snaps of my LX interior.

back on topic... Since we are on the other side of the World, I guess the bezel is right-side up?

1980 bj40

Here is the latest, albeit temporary, addition to the fleet.

1980 BJ40 with a new B diesel, new water pump, starter, injectors, etc. All original paint with a bit of rust in the usual places.

Sold to the USA

My little mustard BJ40 is moving to America. One more Cruiser going where she will be appreciated:) This is not to imply that Aussies don't appreciate Cruisers at least as much as Americans; simply saying that a RHD Cruiser is more unique in America than it is in Australia.

LX Tachometer

HJ47

The tach in your LX 40 - that's original I assume? I will be doing a 2F to 3B conversion on my 45 LWB and want to add a tach. Do you know if the factory stye ( like the one in the pics above ) is hard to come by? Or should I just go aftermarket? I suppose I could find an aftermarket, or even any Toyota tach, and make it look original.

My build will be a "resto-mod" keeping the body/ dash original or at least Toyota but upgrading brakes, bumpers etc.... But I am planning an interior roll cage and will be placing guages for oil temp, EGT, Amps, radio, extra switches etc. into an overhead console integral to the cage. The tach however should be on the dash panel and look original IMO.

Kevin,

I put a factory tach in my 83 US Spec FJ40, and it looked good. You have to mount it 90 degrees anti-clockwise though, to get the tach to mount for a 2F. For the B Diesel it would be 180 degrees, I imagine, because it is made for the RHD. I agree with you, it looks MUCH better factory.

The part number for the bezel is 55414-90800, and I was able to order mine from the Toyota dealer in Santa Fe. If you can't find it, let me know and I will see if I can find you one from a wreckers down here.

Cheers,

Josh

Thank you for the part#. I found a thread where a member (Teebag) used a tach from the gauge cluster of an FJ60 and actually disassembled it and clocked the circuit board to fit into the bezel you quoted me. :wrench::wrench: I'm going for a tach for my 3B but this thread has all kinds of info. Awesome resource this forum is. I'll be going this route for sure and try to source one.

Kevn,

Teabag's site is great! I put a 2F tacho from an FJ60 in my 83 FJ40, and that is why it is 90 degrees off. Here in Australia, I just put an Autometer in mine, as I could not get the 2F tacho to work. I looked at rotating the tach like Teabag did, but I thought I would bugger it up for certain... now I wonder.

Cheers,

Josh

Thanks Alkarich. No time like the present- the Aussie dollar is down, and there are still a few HJ47s running around down here.:D

That's great Mike,

So you still have that 79? Any photos of it? I'd love to see a then/now photo of that one. You can post it on my 'patches84 FJ45' thread so we don't hijack this thread. I also have photos on that of that 72 FJ40 (the Toad) then and now. I lived in Rock Springs from 1973-1975- my dad was the photographer/journalist for the Rock Springs Rocket.

Cheers,

Josh

Hey Josh,
Posting here so not to hijack the "old 45 photos" thread. I wasn't in Pinedale until 79 and then I was only there about a year. I went back several times to visit but just for a day. Its a beautiful part of the country. I really liked it there expect for the part about how cold it got in the winter. Damn cold!

For the most part, I still have the 79, but its been grafted to a 68 frame. Right after I made the last payment on it in 1983 I had an accident where I flopped it on the drivers side on Interstate 80 in Wyoming. I wasn;t living there at the time, I was making a trip from Colorado to California. It was at night and during the winter. I hit some black ice and lost control. It was an exciting ride! After that, I put the soft top on it since the hard top was pretty wasted. At the time, I always wanted a soft top anyway so it was a good opportunity to do it.

Here's a couple photos of it right after I got it in 79 and then a recent photo of it, about 2 years ago. Still looks prettty much as it does in this photo except with a few more scratches. :)

Tht's really nice MikeR,

How did you get a 79 to mate with an older frame? Where did you put the tank?

G'day Y'all,

I just got back to Australia a little while ago after being home in beautiful New Mexico for a while. I also visited my folks in Boulder, and enjoyed every minute of the cool weather. I thought I would post a few snaps of Patches. I keep her up on blocks in my garage with a trickle charger on the batts. I also have a pre-luber installed, so one of my friends circulates the oil every now-and-again. She started right up once I put fresh petrol in her- man, I LOVE that truck!! I forgot how much fun that Vortec is...now I really miss her.

She is back in the garage now, back up on blocks with the trickle chargers back on. I put in fresh synthetic oil, changed the coolant, and gave her a good clean...so at least she has been laid up well for the next time I go home. In the mean time, at least I have my LX to keep me company down here.

Cheers,

Josh
