snow run again

One more snow run snap with David followed by a picture of my thermostat on 28 Jan upon my return to Australia. Australians do not insulate their houses (not even new ones). Australians feel that they insulate adequately for their climate.

I offer this photo as proof that it gets bloody hot here (over 100 F for 13 days in a row and counting thus far:mad:). Insulation also works in heat...:hmm:

Enjoy the cool weather back home, and think of those less fortunate in hotter climes.

Cheers,

Josh

Wahhhh......it's snowing here and 18 degrees Fahrenheit! I have 3 feet of snow in my yard. I'd take 120 degrees any day cuz it's a "Dry Heat" down there!

(We need to catch up BTW!!!)

You can still cook a turkey in a dry heat Johnny-boy.:) It was 6% humidity on the day I took that photo...you'd think rust would be an endangered species down here. I'll Skype you now.

Josh

It would have been great to see you Andrew, but maybe next time. Sadly, it will be sans-Troopy by then, eh? Do you recognise the scenery from the snow run?

Cheers,

Josh

Great pics Josh. What color is your LX, I really like it? That's a great looking pop top troopy next to yours at your house...Who owns that one?

Hey Josh, I was hoping to meet you during your visit but I just got busy. I do recognize the canyon where you guys went wheeling. Hopefully I will get to meet you when next visit Santa Fe again.

Cheers,
Vince

One more snow run snap followed by a picture of my thermostat on 28 Jan upon my return to Ovenstralia. Australians do not insulate their houses (not even new ones). They consider thermal mass to be 'insulation.' Thus, a double brick home with single-glazed windows is considered to be 'insulated' by Aussie standards.:bang: They say this is because 'it doesn't get cold here.'

I offer this photo as proof that it gets bloody hot here (over 100 F for 13 days in a row and counting thus far:mad:). Any Americans who know any Australians should point out to them that insulation also works in heat...:hmm: Australians just figgure that a big enough air con unit will over-come any lack of insulation.:bang:

Enjoy the cool weather back home, and think of those less fortunate in hotter climes.

Vince,

That would be great- I will let you know when I'll be back next. I hope to be there in July, but I am not sure if I will have time. I will be in Chicago for work, but I don't know yet if I will get any time off to come home.

Nevada,

The pop-top belongs to 2manycruisers, and the colour of my LX is Toyota Olive 6L4.

Cheers,

Josh

Thanks Josh. Looks good.

G'Day HJ,

nice looking collection of Cruisers - jealous I am.

I have a BJ42 that I am starting to work on, and will probably incorporate some of your ideas.

cheers

Dan

Dan,

Post up some snaps please! I'd love to get together for a coffee or something some time and check out your rig; I don't know many Cruiser folk here.

Cheers,

Josh

Hi Josh!!!

Spectacular photos, I love the "History Pics"

My father also had an FJ-40´81 as the family had made a bigger FJ-60´82...

Thanks for great pics...

A good thread and great Landcruiser photos (if not tainted by some criticism of Australian or Australians).

I currently have a 1997 40th Anniversary 80 series Land cruiser with the 1hz diesel engine and 5 speed manual gearbox. I've modified it with a rear detroit locker, Safari turbo, dual batteries, 3" suspension lift, Safari snorkel, Alpine sound system, 166 litre long range fuel tank (90 main tank), Rear wheel carrier, Maxis Bighorn mud tyres, cruise control, LED interior lighting, Lightforce XGT driving lights and upgraded headlights (and wiring loom), just to name a few.

My previous Landcruiser was a 1986 HJ61 factory turbo-diesel engine and 5 speed, Airtec snorkel, front auto-locker, etc.

I really appreciated both vehicles and my 80 series is stored in my weatherproof workshop under my house usually in wait for the next adventure.

I've been reading this thread because I am interested in buying a used Troopy and customising it as a good tourer (with character).
I have been contemplating different avenues of customising the 40 series (including/up to the 47 series BJ/FJ/HJ models).
I have considered shortening the rear of a troopy to create a longer wheelbase of the shorty 40 (a troopy without the excessive rear overhang), yet also have the option of removing the top.
I've considered customising a Troopy to look more like the 'earthroamer' camper backs for sale in the states like on the modified 4 door Jeeps.
I've considered modifying a Troopy to fit an 80 series chassis to benefit from the 4 coil suspension and more modern intercooled turbo diesel engines, full time 4WD, 4 wheel disc brakes and 5 speed gearboxes and superb handling. I have downloaded every decent photo that I could find and then altered them in the computer to try to see what they would look like.

If you think that Cruisers aren't appreciated here that is simply untrue. More Landcruisers are sold in Australia than in any other part of the world (except possibly the middle east). Landcruisers outsell all other makes of 4WD in Australia. Many people here work alongside Landcruisers every day as part of their job. While this may cause a lot of people to take them for granted there are also plenty of Aussies that virtually worship the different Landcruiser models. We have many models here that aren't available in the states. I have seen that newer FJ cruiser and I don't particularly like it and many others feel the same, but then I prefer the older models that have more character anyway.

I don't understand the criticism about our regulations for modifying a vehicle. The government sets limitations and regulations to try to prevent unsafe vehicles from being on our roads. From the different forums that I have been on I believe that there are some places in the US that have as tight, or tighter limitations on modifying vehicles than here. Many modifications require an engineering approval which is usually a fraction of the cost of the original modification anyway. I don't think that the rules here are unreasonable, but I certainly have witnessed many backyard vehicle modifiers that are.

We also love to customise our vehicles and I have tried to do that with just about every vehicle that I have owned. Unfortunately, to put a modern day landcruiser direct injection turbo diesel engine into an older vehicle costs around $6000 to $10000 and this is prohibitively expensive for most Aussies (not to mention having a number of restored or customised vehicles as part of their collection).

We have a very diverse range of tracks here and the open dirt roads are only a means of getting to many of them.

I live in one of the northern states of Australia. I enjoy it here because of the nice climate that we have during most months of the years. In the middle of summer it does get quite warm, but the rest of the year makes up for it, and our winters are usually quite mild. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Until recently our houses haven't had insulation because many of them are high set houses. They are designed with higher ceilings and wide verandahs to help the house to keep cool naturally. Many of these houses were built before home insulation was available. The Government in Queensland covers the cost of roofing insulation so the home owner currently gets it installed for FREE. Although we have air conditioning (I'm an electrician so bought/installed it cheaply) we rarely turn it on because our house has a fully insulated ceiling and it has sissilation (?) wall insulation. It is single brick and highset to catch the afternoon breeze.

As I said, great read about the old cruisers, but...

Nah - he's just a "ramblin' man" :)

Rodd,

I am sorry if I offended you. Thank you for the compliments about my Cruisers, and I will take your feelings on board. I will keep this thread only to things-Cruiser, as it should be.

Cheers,

Josh
